Prepare for BCS Lunacy 2010
By Nando Di Fino

If you thought the college football world was relatively quiet so far this season, save for upset losses by Alabama and Texas, among others, you may want to gird yourself for Sunday night. That’s when the season’s first Bowl Championship Series rankings are revealed. Ohio State is ranked number one in the coaches’, Harris, and A.P. polls. Behind the Buckeyes are Oregon, Boise State, and then TCU and Nebraska rotating in the last two spots. All five teams are undefeated, and the season is still young enough where the meat of the schedule has yet to be played. For every yearly argument that Boise State has played a weak set of opponents, for instance, there is a Marshall or Eastern Michigan on Ohio State’s roster of victims. Still, Ohio State is undefeated, plays in a power conference, is ranked first in all three polls, and has a Heisman frontrunner in quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Add this all up, and we get…

A predicted number five ranking in the first BCS standings. And here we go again.

Brad Edwards, who coordinates college football research for ESPN, projected what the BCS rankings would look like if they were released today. The top five:

1. Boise State
2. Oregon
3. TCU
4. Oklahoma
5. Ohio State

“After a 2009 season that was relatively uneventful at the top of the BCS standings,” Edwards writes, “Alabama’s loss has generated excitement over the possibility of a chaotic 2010.” “Chaotic” may be a massive understatement.
