San Antonio named NCAA Championship City

San Antonio Business Journal

The NCAA has selected six cities, including San Antonio, to serve as inaugural members in its new “NCAA Championship City” pilot program.

The San Antonio Sports Foundation is the organization awarded the designation by the NCAA.

With the title comes multiple NCAA championship event hosting opportunities. San Antonio has been awarded the hosting rights for the following championship events:

• 2009 Division II Women’s Basketball;

• 2009 Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer;

• 2010 Women’s Final Four (previously awarded);

• 2010 Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer;

• 2011 Division II Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving;

• 2011 Division I Women’s Volleyball.

San Antonio is also a finalist for the next round of Men’s and Women’s Final Four Championship basketball tournaments in 2012 through 2016.

A decision on those events is expected in mid-November

“It is an incredible honor for the San Antonio Sports Foundation to be awarded this designation,” says Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of the nonprofit organization. “We pledge to deliver incredible events for the NCAA student-athletes, their fans and families, and we look forward to providing opportunities for our citizens, especially our youth, to experience the best in NCAA college athletics.”

The San Antonio Sports Foundation, in partnership with the University of Texas at San Antonio and the City of San Antonio, has a strong history of hosting successful NCAA championships including three Men’s Final Fours (1998, 2004, 2008), one Women’s Final Four (2002) and one Women’s Division I Volleyball Championship (2005). The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee has also hosted several regional basketball tournaments.

The five other NCAA Championship Cities are Cary, N.C.; Cleveland; Indianapolis; St. Louis and San Diego
