San Antonio named a finalist city in the hunt for Women’s Final Four

San Antonio named a finalist city in the hunt for Women?s Final Four - San Antonio Business Journal:

The NCAA says San Antonio is one of eight finalist cities in the bid to host the Women’s Final Four basketball championship in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016.

The Alamo City hosted the 2008 NCAA Men’s Final Four in the Alamodome in April. It will host the 2010 Women’s Final Four.

“The NCAA Women’s Final Four is a terrific event and one in which we have a lot of pride in being a part of,” says Lynn Hickey, athletic director at the University of Texas at San Antonio and a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

“As the host for the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s National Championship, we are thrilled to know we have another opportunity to bring it back again in the future,” Hickey adds. “San Antonio loves NCAA basketball and we will continue to invite their championships into our community as long as we can.”

The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC), which is a partnership between the City of San Antonio, the San Antonio Sports Foundation and UTSA, has a strong history of hosting successful NCAA championship events. That prestigious list includes Men’s Final Fours in 1998, 2004 and 2008, as well as the Women’s Final Four in 2002.

Other finalists include Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Denver; Indianapolis; Nashville; New Orleans and Tampa Bay.

San Antonio officials say the NCAA will conduct site visits to each of the finalist cities in September and October.

SALOC has also submitted a bid to host the Men’s Final Four in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016. The NCAA expects to make an announcement about the finalists for the Men’s championships later this month.
