The Dallas Cowboys have released controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith late Wednesday.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not deny the team is discussing the possible release of Owens in late February.

"That Stephen and I were debating about Terrell, that's just misinformation," Jones said regarding his son, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones at the time. "That's just not accurate. I don't know where that comes from. That's just total misinformation."

The Cowboys paid Owens a $12 million signing bonus just last year, included as part of a new four-year, $34 million deal.

Owens caught 69 passes for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

This is the worst thing the Cowboys could have done.. Who will they blame when Romo self destructs in December yet again for throwing to Witten way too much in crucial situations? They no longer have their scape goat. We'll see if the blame goes where it deserves at the feet of Romo and Garret.

joballer 03-04-09 11:41 PM

williams, crayton, miles austin, sam hurd, and mike jefferson. witten is actually romo's #1 target, but wow. this is scary

I'm not sure about this one, I understand the controversy around TO and the distraction but does this really make them better? I just don't know.:shrug

I'm sure Jones will be making a pitch to bring in Michael Vick as soon as he gets paroled.

Give the guy a break(Jones) he at least had the sac to kut ties with what everyone thought was a kancer . But I would have thought a trade woulda been more probable then his out right release , maybe a trade for Chad Johnson lol . What free agent recievers are left?

SleepyAdamII 03-05-09 11:46 AM

I'm glad he is gone. I'm not sure Romo is the answer at QB, but Owens definitely was counter productive. He really emasculated the coaching staff, and in the end didn't help us win any playoff games with his numerous bobbled/dropped/missed passes.

I would like to see the Cowboys bring in another legit WR. Bolden anyone?

versace3177 03-05-09 12:36 PM

something has to be done , we def. need another receiver!! Now we'll see how Romo plays for sure!

TRslick81 03-05-09 02:27 PM

just more dead weight added to that 20 mil in dead money the cowboys r gonna be carrying next season

NewSpur 03-05-09 05:03 PM

Now when Romo screws up next year who's going to be the scapegoat?

first to goes then wade gets the blame after that then its time for jerry jones to own up

jefe666 03-06-09 12:07 PM

I did not like garretts offensive scheming last year. to vanilla- too predictable. not just romos fault.
