Former Miami coach applies for UTSA job
Former Miami coach applies for UTSA job

<!--END STORY CREDIT/RSS--> <!--STORY CONTENT--> Larry Coker, who guided Miami to the 2001 BCS national championship in his first season as the Hurricanes' head coach, said Wednesday that he has applied for the UTSA football job.
Coker, 60, has been a college football analyst for ESPN since getting fired at Miami in 2006. The Hurricanes were 60-15 and won three Big East titles under Coker. Miami advanced to the BCS title game again in 2002, but lost to Ohio State in double overtime.
Coker said he applied for the UTSA job about 10 days ago and talked with UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey by phone last week.
“That's as far as it's gotten,” Coker said, adding that Hickey did not indicate whether or when Coker might be interviewed.
Hickey and UTSA president Ricardo Romo have said they want to hire a coach by March 1.

Hiring a coach of Coker's caliber will definately up the profile of the UTSA football program. The hiring would make the statement that UTSA is serious about football and are looking to not only exist, but be successful. Hopefully, it would generate some interest from higher profile recruits.

Any new news on this? It seemed liek it was all over the place a few weeks ago and then died off.

I believe they wanted to have a coach in place by the end of February.

What division and conference will UTSA be in?

They will start in D-1AA Southland conference (which they are currently members)

With a 5ish year plan of reaching D-1A C-USA

Coker would certainly help expedite that process along with our ties to the Alamodome plus what the City of San Antonio brings as a whole.

I look forward to watching this transformation. Basketball has seen a great turnaround htis year and UTSA has a real shot at making the big dance.

Coker has old ties in Oklahoma from back in the day with Jimmy Johnson, so I have heard good things about him as a person. I think Miami was a bit too much for him, just because of the character of guys they brought in - aka elite athletes that are primadonnas.
