I like the Stars (or I did when I used to watch hockey more often) but that doesn't look like running up the score to me. It looks like insurance.
1. It is possible to score twice in 40 seconds (which would have turned 3-1 into 3-3). Vancouver only took 16 seconds between goals 3 and 4.

2. By having an empty net Dallas was signalling that
they themselves still felt they had a chance (however remote). You can't play 6 on 5 and then complain if the 5 get the puck.
