One-Legged Wrestler Advances to National Finals

March 19, 2011, 4:45 am

PHILADELPHIA - Arizona State wrestlers Anthony Robles and Bubba Jenkins are one victory away from national championships.

Robles, a two-time All-American who was born without a right leg, continued his undefeated senior season with a pair of victories on Friday at 125 pounds. He earned his first trip to the national finals with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over unseeded Ben Kjar.

The match was scoreless until the third period when Robles, starting on the bottom, earned a point with an escape and two more for a takedown. Kjar escaped to make it 3-1, then was awarded a point when Robles was penalized for stalling. Robles earned another point on riding time to win the match and set up a championship match against second-seeded Matt McDonough of Iowa.

Earlier in the day, Robles defeated Oklahoma's Jarrod Patterson 9-3 in the quarterfinals. He has won his four matches at the national championship by a combined score of 45-6.

Jenkins, fourth-seeded at 157, advanced to the finals with an 8-5 decision over No. 8 Jason Welch of Northwestern. He was a finalist at 149 pounds in 2009 while wrestling at Penn State, and in his return trip to the finals he'll meet up with a former teammate, second-seeded David Taylor of the Nittany Lions.

ASU is seventh in the team standings with 52.5 points and is one of only four schools with multiple finalists. Penn State holds the lead with 92.5 points, followed by Cornell (75.0), Iowa (74.0), Oklahoma State (65.5) and American (56.0).

ASU's Levi Cooper also earned All-America honors at 285 with a pair of victories in the consolation bracket. He will take on eighth-seeded Anthony Nelson of Minnesota on Saturday in the seventh-place match.

Robles takes 125-pound title with 7-1 decision; Penn State earns team

PHILADELPHIA - Anthony Robles finished his NCAA wrestling career in history-making fashion.

Robles, who was born without a right leg, took a 7-1 decision from Iowa sophomore Matt McDonough to win the 125-pound title at the NCAA wrestling championships Saturday. The Arizona State senior got the only takedown in the first period of the match and worked a pair of tilts to secure five back points.

"I had a lot of butterflies going out there.," said Robles, who admitted he's most likely done as a competitive wrestler but wants to remain involved in one facet or another.
