Mike D'Antoni is whipping the New York Knicks into shape

Mike D'Antoni is whipping the New York Knicks into shape - New York Knicks Basketball - NJ.com

Mike D'Antoni's goal of building a run-and-gun New York Knicks offense is breaking in the New York Knicks and conditioning them to a whole new regimen of workouts.

The New York Times is straight forward with Mike D'Antoni's philosophy:

Mike D'Antoni wants the Knicks to run -- fast and hard and with a purpose -- because it is easier to put the ball in the basket if the defense is not there yet.

While any coach would surely be happy with an immediate turn around, D'Antoni realizes the difficulties that lie ahead, as quoted in today's Daily News:

"You play for two or three years and when every play doesn't matter and when every game doesn't matter, you get into those habits," he said. "And really, it plays tricks on your mind. You think you're playing hard, but you really aren't."

The Journal News advises fans to keep an open mind because things may not run as smooth as planned right off the bat:

The players are still digesting much of the information overload that comes with installing a new philosophy, so the offense is not running smoothly. And the defense sometimes gets lost in thought.

A few ugly moments are to be expected.

The New York Post indicates D'Antoni is not satisfied with his team at this point:

On the eve of their preseason opener against the Raptors at Air Canada Centre, D'Antoni said he's unhappy with their intensity level in his first critical remarks as Knicks head coach.

The Knicks look to test their new form tonight against Toronto in the first preseason game under new head coach Mike D'Antoni. Game time is 7:30.

Do you think the run-and-gun will be apparent tonight? Share your thoughts below.

Did the writer use the word "Defense" in an article with D'antoni without the words "Lack Of" in front of it?

pointless hype. the guy is a good regular season coach, and even a pretty good playoff coach, but no amount of offseason hype about him "whipping them into shape" (even if it is true) will alter the fact that he has a team with inferior talent, bad attitudes and which is poorly put together, especially to play a running system. No offense to the guy, maybe in 2-3 years he'll have turned it around. In the meantime, 25-26 wins would be my guess.

D'Antoni is whipping the Knicks into shape? They should be used to getting whipped by now.

I think Suns were getting into shape better and better as the season went on by running all the time.

Just by playing their style of the play..

Wonder if NYK can do that.

How can these guys play well together when so many of these guys need the ball to be effective?

IMO Suns D has been massively underrated just like our O has been underrated for years. Sure they were destroyed in this PO bc we abused Shaq and Amare for not playing a good pick and roll D. Plus there was Steve Nash who couldn't play D against Tony.

But their D in 06-07 season was very good IMO already.

If Mike couldn't make Suns players play enough D, however, I should wonder..how can we expect NYK players disciplined enough to play good D?

I don't know if I can agree with that. One of the things Steve Kerr tried to do was to get Mike D'Antonio to employ some kind of effective defense. Why would Steve do that if the Suns play good defense? Have you seen the type of matador defense Steve Nash plays? He is not the only one. One of the very few players who played any assemblance of D was Raja Bell. It is a well known fact that D'Antoni is less interested in D and more interested in pushing the ball up the court. I wonder how well that worked out for him?

Well, we all know that Nash can't play any D.

I said they couldn't play enough D,

...but not as bad as ppl make them out to be IMO.

Sure they looked bad in 08. a lot more so than 06-07 bc they lost Marion ( one of the best defensive guys they had) and had guys who couldn't play D... Shaq (especially pick and roll. But played a real good and physical D vs Timmy in one-on-one situation ), Amare (still massively underachieving in D) and Nash.

But don't you think their D was good enough in 07?

Anyway...we had our share of real physical battles with them in 08 as well. IMO the series record vs Suns(3-1) is massively misleading, considering how hard it was for us to oust them.

Wow. How original guys. Here we go again with the same old pre-conceived, biased-ness that plauges the minds of each and every individual who seemingly can't think beyond what opinions they pick up from those of others. Anyone can claim how horrible the knicks can potentially be, but it takes a real brain to determine how could they can be and what to expect. Those who readily anticipate a disaster, I think you'll be surprised.

It's a pity we're not all as impartial and wise as you, drinking our hatergade. Perhaps you can share more of your wisdom with us on the Knicks? Tell me again how the Bucks will be an Eastern Conference Contender. They've certainly wowed in the preseason. It must be that great defence Skiles is teaching them.

Is that your pre-concieved, biased opinion?
