I thought it was hilarious during the playoffs that the TV guys all kept doing the Kobe-greatest-player-on-the-planet jive while Pierce was beating the crap out of him on the floor.
I've seen Pierce lead his teams back from crushing deficits any number of times. He's one of those guys that teammates will crash through a wall for. Not his fault that his career has been saddled with some truly lousy teams.
I don't know if he's the best in the world, but he's mad good and deserves consideration.
I think many have mislead paul pierceīs responses, paul (at least is what i got) is trying to say that even if he didnīt say it before he believed in himself, and now, being champion and MVP of the finals he can somehow legitimately say that he is the best. (the fact that he outplayed kobe in those finals may be a fact too).
And about the favorite team, he just intended to say that his favorite players are the celtics starting five, as a way to say, "my favorite team is me and my teammates".

Pierce's comments are nothing to get upset about. It's more funny than anything. His humility is freaking hilarious though considering that last year his team finished 29th out of 30. I guess he forgot about that.

True Ray Allen and Garnett helped out ALOT, everyone needs help though. Last year they were utterly horrible and nobody thought much of Pierce outside of a very good player I admit, but you must admit he did do it when it counted and can claim he is atleast top 5 right now from that whether it's true or not, he earned a right to say that with his finals etc. He is not the best player in the game, but him saying he is doesn't bother me because it just shows he believes in himself. I know that sounds cocky like some said in here, but seirously how serious can you take him when he said his fave 5 is his teammates which just shows he is trying to be loyal to his team. I still like what he said about Manu though, true or not.

Oh yeah they did. Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett were the difference between the Celtics being 2 games away from worst team in the league last year without them to being the best team with them.
I don't see the Celtics having a clear best player. Garnett and Pierce have an equal impact on them winning in my opinion. The Celtics won because they had the most overall talent on their team and they have a great defensive coach, not because Pierce is better than everyone else.
Teams will also figure out how to attack that zone the Celtics play and over the next couple years they won't be as effective defensively. Then we will see how good Pierce is. He's not as bad as he seemed last year and he's not as good as he seemed this year. The Celtics won't repeat.

in all fairness, while i agree with what you're saying, the celtics being practically the worse in '07 i don't think falls completely on pierce. did you see his team?! he played 47 games, and you KNOW the celtics front office/coaches wanted were tanking after a certain point.
pierce played amazing in the finals (his duel with lebron in game 7 was also a classic). but at the same time, he's not carrying the load of kobe or lebron, because he's got 2 other all-stars who can do so much for the team. maybe it's better to think of him in comparison to someone like manu. he can take advantage of a situation and be so damn dominant, and any single night he can look like the best player on the floor. but you might not consider him the best at his position, simply because this comes as a result of not having to necessarily be the biggest focus of the other team.

He's better than Kobe, but I'm not sure about him being the best. Could be if one consider some details, like his offensive and defensive performance in big games or in the clutch.
You win the title, you have bragging rights until next year. Pierce was great in the finals, but anyone who watched the Hawks series would have never thought those guys would make it to the finals. He was pretty lousy at all the games at Philips arena and was terribly outplayed by Joe Johnson.
