Andrew Bynum's agent David Lee said that the discussions on a contract extension with the Lakers have been tabled until September.
``We aren't going to talk again until September until they have a chance to see what they're getting,'' Lee said. ``But I don't have any concerns about it.''
Lee said that once negotiations begin, it was ``very important'' that the extension be completed by the time the season starts.
Is LA going to have trouble keeping this guy? Is Bynum ging to face any setbacks because of the injury?
Who knows really! The kid is young so his youth can play to his advantage. I want him to come back healthy so the Lakers have no excuse when the Spurs trounce them this year. Lets just hope Gin-O-Bili starts the year healthy. Should be a fun training camp. I hope the Spurs get an NBA-TV training camp episode like the Hornets did last year (thats the only team I saw get round the clock coverage)

I think if he's healthy the Laker won't hesitate to pretty much max the guy out. They have the money and Bynum could be a ten year All-Star.
Of course, I'm not sure what downside there is to the Lakers waiting (for them). It's not like Bynum's going to get more money elsewhere in the end, and there's no bigger stage than playing with the Lakers on a Kobe-led team.

Obviously the Lakers are being smart and waiting until they determine that Bynum doesn't have a permanent trick knee. That's understandable.
But don't forget that Bynum hates Bryant. Bryant dissed him and threw him under the bus last summer, and Bynum hasn't forgotten it. If the Lakers don't extend him, he's long gone.
Not very many players want to play with Bryant. A "Kobe-led team" is only good for Bryant, not necessarily for any of the other players.
All that said, I hope thay do give him a max deal, because I think Bynum is overrated. He's highly regarded because he's still young. But right now he's a spaz in many ways. I'm not convinced he's a perennial all star. Maybe a two-time all-star, since he's a Laker, but dude is no Hakeem or Kareem. Bynum doesn't scare me.

Who other than Dwight Howard is showing any glimpses of stardom as a big man?
I don't think he'll be on the level of Hakeem or Kareem, but he sure does have talent. And keep in mind-- the bar for an all-star big man is lower than it is for PG's or swing men. Recent all-stars include Brad Miller, Mehmet Okur, and Jamaal Magloire. He's already better than Andrew Bogut and Channing Frye, both drafted ahead of him. It wouldn't take much to beat out the rest of the centers (other than Yao) every year, especially if you're a Laker.
Of course, there is that Greg Oden issue to contend with . . .
