Just curious. I don't think he's a great player, but I don't think he's all that bad, either. It seems like that he hits the 3, rebounds, and is eminently coachable. Yet there seems to be many posters here who have nothing but disdain for the guy. Is it just because of his contract? What do you see as his faults? Is this another Jaren Jackson / Malik Rose kind of situation?
Because he's nonathletic, can't bang in the paint, doesn't match up well with opposing forwards (to echo skunk works) and he's a dirty stinking GINGER KID!
Cause he is one dimensional and overpaid. People seem to like him on this site for some unknown reason, but being a die hard Spurs fan that knows talent...this guy sucks. We gave him 3 years and 9 Mil? Why? He is worthy of a roster spot....but that is it. Malik Rose made twice as much and was given a 5 year deal so the simialiarites are there. Jaren Jackson, Glen Robinson, Danny Ferry, Stephen Jackson, Brent Barry, michael Finley...yeah...we have tried to keep shooters around for this system, but I can't think of how Bonner ever sees the court in a meaningful game. Come on....sucker someone into a trade and get rid of this guy.
The anger should be at the FO for signing him, not at Bonner. To compound it, Bonner was stuck behind the ghost of Robert Horry. A doghouse casualty. They should have moved him last year before the deadline. It seemed clear to me Pop was never going to trust him, yet we hang on to him to drag his value down into the mud.
This is a bad trend we keep repeating.
Perhaps he'll compete with Tolliver in camp and this will bring out the best in both. That's the best scenario. Or we trade him for a SF, that's also a good scenario. Sitting him on the bench next year - a bad scenario.

I happen to like Bonner and feel he has not been given a real shot with any consistent playing time. However he has been in the Spurs system long enough for me to know that he is not going to get his shot at more PT......I have no idea why. Popovich has that answer. My personal thoughts is that if the Spurs do happen to trade him they will recieve at best a 2nd round pick and maybe some cash.......

I agree. I wonder if Pop sees something in practice that we're not aware of.

You're free to disagree but I don't think it has anything to do with his complexion or ethnic background as you've implied. He's just soft. Find a video on YouTube showing Bonner playing tough, grind it out basketball ... oh wait, there are none.
i commend him for his hustle and great character and energy, although sometimes i think he has too much energy...meaning he gets excited when he is on the floor, and messes up plays. on offensive sets, he will sometimes take a three pointer (usually wide open), but with 22 seconds left on the shot clock. he knows he is a great three point shooter, but sometimes the situation doesn't call for it. and while his 3pt% is high, a smarter-run play for a layup on the inside has a higher percentage.
i also remember the game that did it for me with matt...i believe it was against the rockets, and we were down by 2 with last possession of the game. the play was set up for a WIDE OPEN 3 by barry, but bonner instead decides to break up the play and go for a running lay-up in the crowded paint. this was the beginning of the rocky feb-march 2008 months. good energy? yes. channeled correctly? no

I submit that Spursreport always has to have one whipping boy. Bonner's downfall is that Damon is no longer on the team.

The Red Rocket has a good 3 pt shot. Whether or not he has been given enough opportunity to showcase his talent is anyone's guess. I personally like the guy, but if he does not start to contribute soon, he will be gone. It will be interesting to see what happens now that Tolliver has been signed.

I have no idea why anyone likes this bum on here.... I mean I never see him hit a shot in any of the games I see, nor does he do much else when I watch him play. He is a bad contract and hasn't improved at all since being here, there is a reason he gets little PT and I think some need to figure that out.

Come back, reload and get em next year Spurs.
It's easy. He's very limited and he's overpaid. So it's hard to get too excited about him. The only thing he can really do is hit the occasional three. But he's not as reliable from three as Barry was, or even Bowen. And he doesn't bang and rebound like you might expect him too. So, what good is a big bruiser white boy if he's not really a big brusier white boy?
Udoka makes just over 1.0 million. Amazing deal.
Bonner makes 3.0. Hideous deal.
Kurt Thomas makes just over 4.0. Great deal.
Bonner adds up to dead weight. The only way he'll see the floor is if somebody gets hurt.
It's true that the whole thing is more the FO's fault than Bonner's, because he does try hard. But he needs to go. Maybe he can be packaged around the trade deadline.

Did you see him hit one three pointer last year that wasn't in some meaningless game against the Warriors when the only Spurs we had healthy was Bonner himself and Vaughn? The reason people don't have a high regard for him is because he hasn't managed to be anything more than a practice player in his two years here. Who knows, maybe he's a hell of a practice player, but all fans care about is what their team's players contribute on the court, and in that regard, Bonner has been a big fat zero.
