Dallas paper/readers react to Spurs Trade

Eddie Sefko/Reporter
There's a report out there that the Spurs' pursuit of Richard Jefferson has come to fruition with the trade of Fabricio Oberto, Bruce Bowen and Kurt Thomas.
Can't imagine that's all there is to this deal.

In fact, I've heard other rumblings regarding the Bucks. But more about that as the day unfolds. There are going to be lots of rumors now that the first domino appears to have fallen.
Milwaukee, by the way, would save more than $16 million in this deal, by the way, the first of many teams that will put cents before sense this summer.

As for the Spurs, Jefferson is the kind of dynamic offensive player who will make life even easier for Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, and give them insurance in case Manu Ginobili has advanced into perennial injury-plagued status.

Meanwhile the Mavs just stay pat loving the team. We could have offered Jerry Stackhouse if they were saving money. Well now we have to start at Vince Carter now I guess.

Jefferson's numbers last year:
19.6 points
4.6 rebounds
2.4 assists
They gave up nothing to get him. Again as they do every year they make a trade to upgrade and build around the big 3. They do what they can to maximizes the few years they have left with Duncan.

my guess is they will now move ginobili, etc. to get a big man. hopefully not Amaré.

dude donnie get up from ur fat ass and get some impact players....the only elite team in the west whose number we supposedly had has again moved into a different league!! (metaphorically ofcourse)
i say we sign and trade j kidd to boston for rondo or even better j kidd and terry to boston for rondo and allen
why can't our scrappy pieces -dampier and stack get us back something of value????

Seems like a solid guy who will fit in well with what they do in SA. He reminds me of a younger Stackhouse; too bad the Mavs couldn't have unloaded the original for the replica.

It is about time the Spurs make a strong move to try and keep up with the rest of the powers in the west. I don't think it is enough but it is a start in the right direction. Spurs need Ginobili to come back strong next year.

Dang it!!! Can you imagine TP Mason Jefferson Duncan Bonner? They don't have anyone coming off the bench though but watch them sign Gortat or some crap.

We could have packaged Stack, Wright and Carroll to meet the numbers on Jefferson. Stacks buy is much better than the Spurs players.
This is a make or break year for Donnie!

Patience now, gentlemen. Mr. Cuban could have brought Mr. Jefferson to Dallas, but in doing so would likely have sacrificed his juiciest bargaining chip, Mr. Stackhouse's expiring contract. I suspect that the Mavericks front office has identified several realistic trade possibilities of a magnitude superior to this. Patience, my young apprentices.

Yeah that old "cubes" and donny have consistently outsmarted that dumb old riverwalk spurs braintrust. Old RC and Pop just shudder when they think about what big move "cubes" is about to pull off. But whatever it is "cubes" will let everyone know he is the smartest man in the NBA which is why the other teams love to make trades with him.

A good team gets better. Dallas is going to pull another Djop kind of trade. They are waiting for that amazing trade and I have a feeling they are going to say that we are waiting for 2010 free agents.

It is like Cuban said, a lot of talk and no action. Spurs did not talk and their name did not even come up in any trade talks, but they pulled a good one off. No talks, only action.

Bowen age 38, Thomas age 36, and Oberto age 34. Expiring contracts or not, these guys were all close, or are, done. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucks let one or two of them go and they end up back on Spurs roster.

lets look at mavs needs - starting shooting guard, starting center and a reliable small forward. good lucking getting decent help at every position with what he have to offer back....and yeah right we let jefferson for nothing trade go because we had some aces up our sleeve!!! half the time i feel cubes makes so much noise on every decent trade we make that other GM's hate doing business with him unless he gives them 2 first rounders and a future perennial All star for an aging hall of famer past his prime

Ya, I agree. If the Mavs just sit back and don't do anything after this, Donnie is a gonner. But we are always trading for pieces to make us equal to other teams (see Damp to stop Shaq a few years back). We have nobody to stop Parker and Ginobili. We held Duncan at bay in the playoffs. But now who will stop Jefferson. We're screwed.

Deals like this one are why the Spurs have 4 rings and of course we here in Dallas don't have any. Doesn't surprise me one bit I hate to say.

report as objectionable

Posted by THE Truth @ 5:56 PM Tue, Jun 23, 2009
It isn't deals like this that has earned the Spurs four rings. It's the fact that the Spurs totally tanked two times and were "rewarded" with Robinson and Duncan.
The Spurs are both lucky that both times they got the first pick of the draft (magic lottery happens in the NBA) and that both players ended up being what they projected to be in the NBA. There are numerous top picks who have not worked out.
Have they made some nice moves in acquiring good complementary players as well as good starting players - yes.
Have they gotten lucky with Robinson and Duncan - yes.

Posted by jumpnjiminy @ 6:42 PM Tue, Jun 23, 2009
There are numerous teams who have been "rewarded" with great players but couldn't put the players and coaching staff around them to be successful. And by successful I mean winning an NBA championship. The Spurs have done that 4 times. Making the right picks at the top and the bottom of the draft (Parker and Ginobili) have been why the Spurs are successful. That's not luck. That's outstanding GM work and coaching.

Whew! I'm glad we got RJ cuz we might have gotten KNOCKED OUT of the 1st round again. But we are still the greatest cuz we have four championships in the PAST, despite being shallow - this is the year!

Here's another post by a mavs fan:

i'll give it to the spurs. their organization doesn't stay attached to anyone not named parker, duncan, or ginobili. the benefit of having an owner that stays out of the basketball side of business is that he doesn't fall in love with players and won't trade them or move them out. enjoy another year of okay regular season success and an early playoff exit.

And the Spurs will get Kaman for Ginobili.

And Mark Cuban will write a blog about it.

ok, ok one more:

Quote:
"Donnie has been my biggest supporter from day one," said six-time NBA All-Star and 2007 MVP Dirk Nowitzki. "He works harder than any coach or president in the NBA. He thinks about basketball 24 hours a day."
Really? 24 hours a day? What does he think about? How round the ball is?

I'd feel sorry for Mavs fans except for the fact that most of them are also Cowboy fans and they suck.

i love how everyone is losing it over our trade for RJ.. these reactions are from another web forum i post at. they have one thread dedicated to the nba.

Fellside
"Again, I apologize for being annoying. I'm really angry about the San Antonio trade. The Spurs never screw up. They don't always hit home runs, but they don't make stupid trades that kill them. They usually draft well, make good deadline trades, and scout well. Meanwhile Dallas can't get out of their own way."

Sonny
"If you don't think RJ is good enough to be the fourth best player on a title team, you haven't watch enough of him. He's perfect what they do. He's good enough to average 20/5/5 but he won't make a fuss about sharing with Duncan/Parker and Manu. Plus, they LITERALLY have 7 guys on roster (8 if they pick up Finley's option). They run their team so efficiently it's actually kind of annoying."

Cassidy
"Every non-Spurs fan has a heart attack at the thought of them winning another championship"

Poor _allas Mav Fans, they are almost comparable to Suns fans. I kind of want the Spurs to win another one for Fin just to piss those guys off even more.

Wow...I thought Mavs fans were way douche-ier than that! I didn't think they could ever realize that the spurs could do good...

Man, when I went to that game 5 this past year...while walking out of the AT&T Center, I wished so many hateful things on Dallas fans...starting with a sweep by N.O.

Now, I'll just sit back and watch our guys demolish Dallas!!!!
