However, if you listen to Sasha (now a member of the New Jersey Nets), we've had him all wrong. The man just wants to win, and a revelation of his true talents would actually place him among the best players in the league. From Colin Stephenson in The Newark Star-Ledger:

"I know I can score 20 or 30 points anytime I want," Vujacic said. "But I'm not that kind of a guy. I want to win. I want to play the right way. Some games I'm going to get 10 shots, some games 15 shots; sometimes, especially coming off the bench, you're going to feel cold, and you need time to get in the rhythm. But right now, what I care the most is for us to become a better team. And we are really capable of doing that."

As noted by Trey Kerby at The Basketball Jones, Sasha has never scored 30 points in a game and went 33 months between scoring 20 points, so "anytime I want" is apparently an exceedingly rare occasion. You see, Sasha is like a monk, withholding selfish pleasures for the greater glory, which in this case is the holy win. That's why Sasha never did anything to make the Lakers lose, like, say, making only 39 percent of his shots in the 2008 NBA Finals against the Celtics.
Away from the glitz and glamor of Los Angeles, Vujacic is now trying to create a role for himself in New Jersey and beyond as a veteran leader who knows what it takes to get deep into the playoffs, and I applaud him for it. But there's a better way to do this that doesn't involve massively exaggerating one's skills. All Sasha has to do is perform regularly like he did on Wednesday, when he put in a career-high 25 points to pull off a surprising win against the Hornets. Start talking like this, though, and people will wonder why you just didn't go for 30 points. Is it because you'd need 30 shots to do it?
NBA players can't succeed without ridiculous self-confidence, but there's a point at which they shouldn't tell the press exactly how highly they think of themselves. Clearly, Sasha went far beyond that point with these comments.

Pistons to retire Dennis Rodman jersey

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons plan to retire Dennis Rodman's No. 10 during a halftime ceremony later this season.

Rodman, the eccentric rebounding specialist who helped the Pistons win NBA titles in 1989 and 1990, will be honored April 1 when the Pistons host the Chicago Bulls, a team Rodman won three championships with from 1996 to 1998.

Detroit rookie Greg Monroe currently wears No. 10 and will be allowed to keep doing so.

Rodman averaged 8.8 points and 11.5 rebounds in 549 games with the Pistons. He was the league's defensive player of the year in 1990 and 1991.

As I write this, they’ve got $54,000 and change pledged towards the statue with media buzz building and 38 more days of fundraising to go. They’re aiming for a seven-foot statue, but now that this semi-joke has gone national and the money’s rolling in, the sky’s literally the limit. The whole thing started as a goof on Twitter, until Detroit Mayor Dave Bing took it seriously enough to tweet a polite thanks-but-no-thanks, which naturally galvanized a movement. Hence the difference between Egypt and America, my friends: They use Twitter to overthrow a dictator, we use Twitter to build public shrines to campy movie cyborgs.
No lie: I find the whole endeavor oddly touching.

Jerry Paffendorf, who helped organize the campaign, acknowledges that RoboCop will not revive Detroit. But he hopes the project will not only create a tourist attraction, but also show that “crowd funding” can make a difference in a city where so much needs to be done. Additional money collected through March 26, when fund-raising is scheduled to end, could go toward other — perhaps more important — projects, he said.
“Sometimes it takes a RoboCop to show a different way to do things,” said Mr. Paffendorf, a 29-year-old Internet entrepreneur. “My hope is that it sets an example and puts this kind of funding on the map, so when people see big problems, they can think, ‘If crazy people raised $50,000 for a RoboCop statue, we can certainly raise more to take on something bigger.’”
The project’s merits have been debated on numerous local blogs and radio programs, and the effort has been criticized as wasting money and glorifying the fact that Detroit has long been Hollywood’s default example of urban decay. “This is what happens when irony runs amok,” read a headline on the Web site of Crain’s Detroit Business on Wednesday.

More from the AP, which quotes an organizer as saying, “I’m very positive that it’s gonna happen”:

Walley said he sees potential for the planned 7-foot sculpture in the city, hoping RoboCop would draw the curious and tourists, just as the Rocky Balboa likeness does in Philadelphia and the Fonzie statue known as “Bronze Fonz” does in Milwaukee.
Plus, it’s just a cool idea, said Walley, 35, who lives in the city.
“There’s definitely a pop icon, kitsch factor to it, for sure, but it’s definitely in the light-humorous end. It’s not funny in that it’s a joke on Detroit or anything like that,” he said, referencing fears the statue would play to the perception that Detroit is plagued by crime and violence.

I think it’s 99 percent kitschy joke and one percent earnest-jumpstart-for-urban-renewal, but a nationally famous Robocop statue would at least bring the number of reasons to visit Detroit up to, er, one. Besides, he’s the perfect spokesman for the city’s aspirations — a symbol of a return to order and hope for the future amid a dystopian landscape, with a little LOL tossed in.

'Did I do that?' was uber-nerd Steve Urkel's famous (and nauseating) catch phrase on the cheesy 90s sitcom 'Family Matters' anytime he did something clumsy. While Amar'e Stoudemire may have a different body type, he is rocking the Urkel rims at a press conference announcing Carmelo Anthony's trade to the Knicks. Let's hope he and Melo don't clash like Urk and Carl Winslow did.

Knicks president Donnie Walsh (l.) doesn't exactly rule over an evil empire - and his level of mastery of The Force is unknown - but he does bear a strong resemblance to Star Wars villain Emperor Palpatine (r.). Playing the part of Darth Vader for the Knicks: Isiah Thomas.

While those two brothers didn't get along (Cecil tried to frame Bob for a crime) the Lopez Twins seem like kindred spirits - especially when it comes to not rebounding. An incredible 14-feet of Lopez are only averaging a combined 9.5 boards per game this season. That's fewer than six indivudual players and only decimal points ahead of Brook's teammate Kris Humphries-Kardashian (9.3 rpg).

In our look-alikes, they may be the closest in height, with Brooks listed generously at 6-foot and Rock standing 5-foot-11. Spurs Mascot Gets Ejected

In a sign of how touchy the NBA is becoming about violence since the Nov. 19 melee in Auburn Hills, Mich., a referee Wednesday night ejected the San Antonio Spurs' mascot, the Coyote, for playfully challenging the Minnesota Timberwolves to a fight.

With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, Wally Szczerbiak collided with Spurs rookie Beno Udrih, and Udrih went down, according to WOAI.com, a radio station based in San Antonio.

When Szczerbiak went to help Udrih up, he was bumped out of the way by Spurs guard Bruce Bowen, who helped Udrih instead. Bowen and Szczerbiak exchanged heated words and were assessed technical fouls. But they stayed in the game. The Coyote, however, did not.

During the altercation, the Coyote had pretended to become enraged and acted as if he was preparing to go onto the court and fight. This is routinely done by mascots in such situations across the league. According to WOAI, referee Jess Kersey apparently thought the mascot was too close to the action.

"I want the wolf out of here," Kersey yelled. "He's gone. Now."

Fans, coaches and most of the players were stunned. Spurs all star center Tim Duncan was amused.

"That's the greatest thing I've ever heard," Duncan said after the game. "That's the kind of toughness that we have on this team. They were afraid of the Coyote, so they had to toss him. That was incredible."
