I don't think so.

He'll probably get a contract offer elsewhere because of his strong summer league play, but we have Finley, Barry, and possibly Eric Williams now as our backup swingmen, so he's not really needed.

I think Melzer beats him out for the last spot on the team.

I agree I think Melzer has the advantage because of his height.

Who the F is Saunders? You mean Melvin Sanders?? He's supposedly been the best or at least most consistent player for the Spurs in Utah, but we don't need a 6'4 shooting gaurd who can't shoot. We need to find a 6'7 or above swingman capable of good perimeter defense. But it wouldnt surprise me if we fail to do so and end up settling on Sanders to fill out the roster.

^^^ no, I'm pretty sure he meant Saunders, and I think we can all agree that Flip Saunders will not be on the Spurs next year so what's the problem?

according to the summer league box scores his name is melvin saunders......now since i have not seen any of the games, i am going to assume he is the same melvin sanders (not saunders) that played for SA last year.

I would like him to make the team.....Melzer too. Get rid of Williams and our lineup would be set.

C - Elson, Butler, Bonner
PF - Duncan, Horry, Oberto
SF - Bowen, Barry, Melzer
SG - Manu, Finley, Sanders
PG - Parker, Beno, Vaughn

He might get a training camp invite, then he might not.

I agree with coyote_geek, I doubt he makes the final cut. If two of the three finalists (Saunders, Melzer and Smith) make the final cut, it'll probably go down to who makes the guaranteed contract deadline in January which Melzer probably wins.

Only problem is in theory, we get somebody of value for Williams, leaving Sanders the odd man out. Otherwise, we'd keep Williams and wait for teams to fall out of the race and want the future salary cap relief. He's too valuable to just write off.

As coyote_geek posted, it doesn't matter if they can cut him and still trade his ending contract.

Then I'm a bit confused because Glenn Robinson got cut 2 years ago, so we signed him. His previous team (I can't remember - think it was Phila) couldn't trade his contract. was that just b/c he cleared waivers? What is the difference between that situation and the possible one here if Williams is cut?

The contract amount still needs to be paid. I believe Robinson was bought out. Spurs had Ferry who basically retired but Spurs traded his last year to Indy(I believe), so they got cap an expiring contract.
