8 Team, 19 Player Trade?

8 Team, 19 Player Trade?
Written by Eze
Thursday, 13 July 2006
According to multiple sources, in a story broken by Sacramento's Grant Napier on Tuesday evening sports radio, owners and general managers are scrambling to put the finishing touches on a massive 8 team trade. Originally slated to include 6 teams and 16 players two other clubs jumped in on the action Wednesday night bringing the total players involved to as many as 19.

The Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers may go down as the franchise who started it all with their heavy shopping of guard Allen Iverson. Golden State is rumored to be the new home of the electric guard who has NBA Finals experience, an All-Star game MVP trophy, and a league in scoring to his credit. Golden State is set to send out forward Troy Murphy in the deal.

The Denver Nuggets are looking to settle the fued between head coach George Karl and disgruntled and oft-injured power forward Kenyon Martin. The New York Knicks have coveted Martin seeking to place the rugged forward alongside Eddy Curry. The Knicks are set to send out Steve Francis to make room for KMart. Also outgoing from Denver would be guard Andre Miller.

The Sacramento Kings appear on the verge of losing guard Bonzi Wells but will seek to sign and trade him in this massive scenerio. Meanwhile the Indiana Pacers will be sending out forward/center Jeff Foster, guard Jamaal Tinsley, and forward Stephen Jackson.

The Atlanta Hawks are in the action looking to sign and trade forward Al Harrington. The Seattle Supersonics are rumored to be the 8th team as they are looking to sign and trade Chris Wilcox who's contract negotiations have come to an impasse.

Eight other players are involved in order to make the salaries match under the current CBA rules.

A huge press conference is scheduled for Friday afternoon as long as all parties can agree and the league approves this NBA record sized transaction.

It´s getting out of control. What´s next? 12 players and 25 teams involved?
Are they trying to set the fans minds on fire?

If Golden State is going to take on AI they're going to have to cough up about another $8 mil in salary to send out on top of Murphy. Foyle fits.

maybe ... but what it means for sure is that Mr Thomas managed to trade a bad contract with 3 years remaining (Francis) for a worse contract with 5 years remaining (kmart)

No telling. One the one hand landing KMart would put another body on that front line, but if the Knicks send out more players than just Francis there could be more room on the roster and the need to fill spots cheaply.

Makes my 4 team trade scenario seem miniscule compared to this.

Teams going retro 70's like if it was a huge spouse swapping party.

Yes. If the knicks send out more players than they get back they need to fill those roster spots. Butler's pretty cheap and would be a pretty easy way to fill one of those spots.

Without knowing the particulars on the deal though, all this is speculation. Plus it's the Knicks. Logic does not apply.

Troy Murphy for AI? That's just to lopsided to swallow. KIng can't be that stupid? I would think they would swap him for Davis or something more than Murphy. Too many questions on this one. Salaries, cap space, talent level, you name it.

The rumor is 8 teams and 19 players, so there's way more to this deal than AI and Murphy. For all we know Murphy isn't even going to Philly. Until we learn more it's too early to judge.

Technically, you have to have more players than teams. otherwise, you have teams involved, but no players dealt from those teams.

Exactly, if the Sixers were swapping AI for Murphy they wouldn't need the other 6 teams. My thinking is that Murphy won't end up in Philly. It's probably Andre Miller OR Steve Francis and 1 other player like Al Harrington OR Rashard Lewis going to Philly in exhange for AI going to Golden State.

Murphy may end up in Denver to replace Kenyon Martin or maybe Jason Richardson is included in this deal (since Iverson plays his position) and he goes to Denver. The Nuggs need a shooting guard with an outside shot in the WORST way now that they lost Buckner to Dallas.

Why don't the Knicks and the Spurs just swap rosters? So many interesting questions would get answered.

Can Pop really coach a team without TD as captain?

Will there finally be some hype for TD and Manu?

How fast can Isiah's reverse-Midas touch destroy a championship contender?

Will Nate Robinson ever "be Nate Robinson" again?

Will Larry Brown take an asst coach job in SA just so he can torment Marbury and Co.?

Will RichB return now that his former favorite team becomes his recent favorite team, and vice versa?

If all the players were in SA with Pop coaching, that dang doghouse would be overflowing.

Looks like the Spurs are not part of this deal. All 8 teams involved were named in the first post: Philly, Golden State, Denver, New York, Sacramento, Indiana, Atlanta, Seattle.

Judging by the salaries for next season, if the Warriors get Iverson in this deal, they have to give up another player (or two) other than Murphy. Iverson makes $17.25 million this year, while Murphy makes 8.28 mill. It seems Jason Richardson's $10mill salary (or Foyle & Pietrus's combined $10mill) could be included in this trade to make it work for GS, if it actually goes down.

11 players were named in the first post as being involved in this 19 player trade. Here's the best I can make of this trade:

1. Golden State: gets Iverson (17.25mill) for Murphy & Richardson (18.28mill) getting AI means they don't need Richardson anymore. Baron Davis & Iverson form the best backcourt duo in the NBA for the next 2 years and GS gets rid of Murpy's contract to avoid luxury tax down the road.

2. New York: gets Kenyon Martin ($12.06mill) and a throw in player (roughly $2-3 mill) for Steve Francis ($15 mill). Isaiah gets his guy. Knicks start Curry, Martin, QRich, Crawford, Marbury.

3. Philadelphia: gets Jason Richardson ($10mill) and Andre Miller ($8.7mill) for Allen Iverson ($17.25mill) & a throw in player ($2-3mill, possibly Kevin Ollie?). Sixers get a starting backcourt in exchange for AI. Starting lineup: Miller, Richardson, Iguodala, Webber, Dalembert looks pretty dang good!

4. Denver: gets Steve Francis ($15mill) & Stephen Jackson ($6mill) for Kenyon Martin ($12.06mill) & Andre Miller ($8.7mill). Denver gets rid of Martin, replaces Miller with a scorer to help out Carmelo, and gets a SG (SJax) that can hit the 3ptr. Starting Lineup: Camby, R.Evans, Carmelo, SJax, Francis.

5. Seattle: gets Troy Murphy ($8.2mill) for Chris Wilcox (assuming he signs for estimated $5mill/yr) and a throw in player (maybe Damien Wilkins @ $2.5mill??) Allows Seattle to get replacement for Radmanovic and get something for Wilcox, since they can't come to terms with him. Starting Lineup: Petro, Murphy, Lewis, Allen, Ridnour/Watson

6. Indiana: gets Al Harrington (estimated $8-9mill), Bonzi Wells(estimated $8mill), and throw in player (Kevin Ollie?) for Foster ($5.2mill), Tinsley ($5.7mill), and S.Jackson ($6.1mill). Starting Lineup: J.Oneal, Granger, Harrington, Wells, Ant.Johnson

7. Sacramento: gets Jeff Foster ($5.2mill) and Damien Wilkins (or other player @2.5mill) for Bonzi Wells (estimated $8mill) Addresses need for a rebounder to replace an ineffective Brad Miller. Starting Lineup: Foster, Abdur-Rahim, Artest, Kevin Martin, Bibby. Miller sits the bench!!!

8. Atlanta: gets Jamal Tinsley ($5.7mill) and Chris Wilcox (estimated $4.5-5mill). Atlanta gets another PG and Speedy gets screwed AGAIN by having to be a backup. With Speedy's track record for injuries (& Tinsley's for that matter) this is a wise decision for them. Starting Lineup: Wilcox, Smith, Williams, J.Johnson, Tinsley/Speedy

I think that's only around 14 players so obviously it's not totally accurate, but if this is the basics of the trade, it has some interesting after effects on some rivals, especially Denver and Golden State who would definitely be in the playoff hunt with Iverson. I guess we'll see tomorrow...

Good think Pacers traded Sjax or else he and Bonzi would have collided big time.

Yeah, you'd think so, but the Nuggets have insisted that they need another big time scorer because Carmelo had to carry the team too many nights. When he tried to do it in the PO's vs. the Clippers he stunk it up cuz they doubled him and the Nuggets had no one who could hit an outside shot. Francis & SJax can hit open J's all day.

Carmelo won't care about Francis having the ball all the time, cuz George Karl will FORCE Francis to pass it into Carmelo for the post up and then play inside-outside ball if they double him. Plus even though Francis is a ball hog, he's more consistent than Andre Miller who's jumper is suspect at times.

As for SJax, he seemed to do fine in SA with Duncan, Robinson, Ginobili, and Parker taking all those shots, he got alot of wide open looks off double teams. He'll be okay as long as he gets to shoot 3's, which is what Karl would want him to do anyway.

I was . No, I must have read what I wanted to read from your post. . It seems to happen a lot on this forum and this time I ran with it. ( Kinda skipped your intro and just started reading at #1.)

Oh well, live and learn. Compliment to you is that it seemed reasonable enough to me to believe.

Oh well, live and learn. Compliment to you is that it seemed reasonable enough to me to believe.
Thanks, I guess I'm just bored. Decided to see how it would work. Of course, I could have it all wrong, but we'll see tomorrow hoepfully.

Yeah, it goes without saying that Sjax doesn't have the best reputation, especially when it comes to "fan appreciation," but Denver would be trading one malcontent for TWO others, which at the time is about the best they can hope to do.

Sounds like a Mark Cuban wet dream. Anyone think Dallas is in the mix?

AJ would probably strangle him (or at least sic his wife on Cuban ) if he messed with their team chemistry and started playing fantasy basketball with his team again. I don't see any big moves from Dallas this season, just minor tweaks like the Croshere for Daniels trade and the Buckner signing.

It's hard to take this story seriously when he actually spells out "Seventy-Sixers"

But it's a great "story", never mind.
