He's young, he hustles, he's shown some talent.

He's from the CBA, hasn't proven he can start, played well for a dismal Knicks team, fouls a lot, might have a weight problem.

Had 7 offensive boards when they played us here last February. Also a 75% free-throw shooter. But he's the most prolific foul machine this side of Keith Van Horn or Danny Fortson.

Actually, it looks like Elson is a more prolific foul machine.

His age is very promising. He's not 22 until March.

He could be the plug-in at Center for a long time. Of course, I guess he'll have to be.

no reason to panic b/c if you think about it, we traded and got rid of two high priced scrubs and are picking up two cheap scrubs. i don't think we're any worse off. what we didn't do was improve, but who would we get? Javtokas would have been a nice pickup, but he would be a rookie and if you think back, manu was good, but also kind of out of control his first year (still good though). Javtokas would probably need a year to groom correctly and why bring him into a pressure packed situation? manu and sjax complemented each other perfectly his first year...javtokas wouldn't have that luxury...anyway, i don't think the spurs got worse, if anything, they should be tougher in the middle. i think we need someone with the toughness of an Mario Elie, Kevin Willis, ...heck even Perdue. We need some guys with a mean streak...i think the spurs need some bodies to play physical against thugs...think of Dallas just pushing us around and no one pushing back...that bothered me alot...we need a thug...Jbut or Eli might just be those cheap thugs we need in the middle... a little rebounding, block shots and 6 fouls...hehehe...i'm sure the FO guys have a plan, although we might be down to plan aaaxxxxyyyyzzzzz999999....hehehehe

NBA Comparison: Antonio Davis

Strength: A real physical specimen at the tender age of 19. Has slimed down and built muscle. His strength allows him to put himself wherever he wants in the post.. Has great hands downlow and anything that goes his way he gets ahold of. His post game is developing, if he can improve in this area, he's got a chance to be a 12 year NBA player. Very athletic and gets down the court pretty well for a big man when he wants to. Looks like a young Elton Brand the way he hits the offensive boards and finds position for rebounds. His huge wingspan (7 foot) makes him a bigger player than he is.

Weaknesses: Post game is still very raw and needs work. In high school he could use his strength to get whenever he needed to (that won't be the case in the NBA). Footwork also needs improvement.... Could have done himself some good by going to college however he should still be drafted. At times he's very inconsistent and lazy on defense, especially in transition. Needs to work harder and get into better shape.

Note: He is 19 years old, he attended a prep school for 1 year.

Butler is a physical monster standing 6-9, 255 pounds but he doesn’t use it to his advantage. He is extremely slow and doesn’t pick up his feet when going back in transition. He is inconsistent on defense as well. Memo to Jackie: Plant yourself on the block, hit the weights, and get some elevation. If he does that, then we will be talking about a force.

To Butler’s credit, he does show flashes of brilliance. He knows he’s bigger than everyone at the high school level. But the SEC is a different story. When he attends Mississippi State, he’ll have an opportunity to play on a good team with promising players and in a conference that produces good power forwards. The future is ultimately in Butler’s hands.

For whatever it's worth, Larry Brown liked him a whole lot more than he liked Eddy Curry. The Cavs like him, and they're looking for someone to be ready to step in behind Zydrunas Ilgauskas. With New York committed to Curry and Jerome James, the Knicks might not match anything long-term.

Tractor Traylor was only about 6'8" at best and much less upside then this kid. Not a good comparison.

Actually, two years from now is when the Spurs are loading up to make a run at someone in free agency who can help win a title. That is when all the contracts except for the big 3 come off the books. Depending on how it plays out with Pop and RC, two years from now may be our best chance.

Jackie might be good someday. He can be the 13th or 14th man and if he improves his game by learning from Pop and Timmy, great. He may also make decent trade bait.
