Mahinmi snubbed from France WC roster

PARIS - France coach Claude Bergeaud will have a roster filled with young NBA players at next month's World Championships.

Bergeaud is backing the youthful exuberance of NBA big men Ronny Turiaf and Johan Petro, each of whom has completed his rookie season. Both men were called up on Monday with ASVEL's Stephen Brun, Napoli's Michel Morandais and Le Mans' Yannick Bokolo to complete the 17-player that begins preparation next week.

"Ronny and Johan are two players with a great potential who also symbolize the future of the national team," Bergeaud said.

Turiaf, 23, has made an astonishing recovery from heart surgery and plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 2.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in 23 games last season after starring colegiately at Gonzaga.

The 6-10 Turiaf had an impressive showing with France's A team last week and made himself an automatic choice for Bergeaud.

"Turiaf has been strong this season as a center and he also successfully completed the transition between university basketball and the professional world," Bergeaud said. "He has shown that we could definitely count on him.''

Petro, 20, split time with Robert Swift at center for the Seattle SuperSonics, averaging 5.2 points and 4.4 rebounds. He also made a good impression on Bergeaud, who selected him ahead of San Antonio Spurs 2005 draft pick Ian Mahinmi.

"(Mahinmi) did good things with the A team, but Turiaf and Petro are largely above him in terms of level," the coach said. "Ian needs to work harder before applying to the national team."

The inclusion of Petro and Turiaf increases the number of NBA players on France's roster to five, joining Mickael Pietrus of Golden State, 2006 Most Improved Player Boris Diaw of Phoenix and All-Star Tony Parker of San Antonio.

France won bronze at Eurobasket 2005 and will be in Group A with 2004 Olympic champion Argentina, defending world champion Serbia & Montenegro, Nigeria, Lebanon and Venezuela. It is considered the strongest group.
