http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/b...p.123d468.html Spurs to conduct workouts for draft prospects Web Posted: 06/18/2006 12:00 AM CDT Mike Monroe Express-News Staff Writer With the NBA draft 10 days away, the Spurs have scheduled workouts this coming week at their practice facility for a number of prospective draftees. The Spurs traded their first-round selection in this year's draft to the Knicks as part of the 2005 deal that sent Malik Rose to New York and brought center Nazr Mohammed to San Antonio. They have the 29th pick in the second round, the 59th of 60 selections that will be made by the 30 NBA teams on June 28. The 2005 champions have not ruled out trading into the first round. "We're as prepared as we are for any draft," assistant general manager Sam Presti said. "And we're prepared to break into the first round if there is an opportunity for a select group of players. We're also prepared if the 59th pick is our one plate appearance." The team's basketball operations staff spent the weekend conducting a minicamp for a number of free agents, three of whom have committed to participating on the team the Spurs will send to the Rocky Mountain Revue summer league, in Salt Lake City, July 15-21. The camp also gave the club's talent evaluators a chance to assess several other players who already had committed to summer league participation with other teams. Will Conroy, a 6-foot-2 point guard from Washington who played last season for Tulsa of the National Basketball Development League; Kennedy Winston, a 6-7 small forward from Alabama who played last season in the Spanish professional league; and Maceo Baston, a 6-10 power forward from Michigan who played last season for EuroLeague runner-up Maccabi Tel Aviv all have committed to play for the Spurs in Salt Lake City. Other players at the weekend minicamp included Andre Brown, a 6-9 forward from DePaul who played last season in Korea; Roger Mason, a 6-5 shooting guard from Virginia who played last season in Israel; Mamatou Diarra, a 6-6 small forward and a member of the French national team; and Eddie Fobbs, a 7-foot center from Sam Houston State who played last season in Korea. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- mikemonroe@express-news.net

that's quite a sensation. Baston has become a star in israel and europe, winning the euroleague with Maccabi in 2004 and 2005 and reaching the finals this year. btw. in the semifinals this year, when Maccabi eliminated Tau, Baston was playing against Scola and in this game he was the best player of Maccabi. (Scola was the best of Tau though, it was quite a great duell) maybe Baston is the option if Scola can't be signed. he was once drafted by the Bulls (1998)in the second round but never played for them. he played only a few games for Toronto. he's 30 now and so he's not exactly a youth injection. but again. quite surprising that he plays summer league. |

Kennedy Winston Birthdate: 7/29/84 NBA Position: Shooting Guard College: Alabama Class: Junior Ht: 6-6 Wt: 230 Hometown: Pritchard, AL High School: Blount NBA Comparison: Rip Hamilton Strengths: A natural scorer…Good athlete, with explosive first step and can rise…Good speed down the floor on the break…Sound shooter with deep range and solid from the line…Can get by his man and into the lane…No mid-range fade, but has a nice floater when penetrating…Can handle with either hand…Solid passer, and good with entry pass…Decent moves in the post, with an up and under and good use of pivot foot…Decent footwork on both ends…Great body control, can really contort in the air to get a shot or pass off…Decent distributor once he gets in the lane...Decent rebounder, who goes after it on the offensive glass...Good height for NBA 2G at 6'6-6'7 Weaknesses: Thin, very slight frame and weak…Does not look as though he gives all out effort, will not dive for balls, do the dirty work and little things…Does a lot of standing around and floating on offense…Will get careless with the ball and is turnover prone…Does not fight through screens on D, or set good screens on O is not a good defender at all, but has the ability to get much better…Can really be taken by aggressive/physical players…Opponents seems to dribble drive past (almost through) him with ease…Does not go for the ball on D-won't jump passing lanes or go after steals/blocks…Really needs to work on a number of areas, especially intensity. -Benjamin Eggar
