MvP, DPOY, CoY, RoY Canidates No Tim,Bowen,or POP

A healthy Davis could be an MVP candidate
Story Tools: Print Email XML
DIME Magazine / Dime Magazine
Posted: 4 hours ago

The start of training camp is hardly far away. And before you know it, the start of the regular season will arrive. So why not have a little fun projecting who might walk away with the season's awards? Check it out!

MVP What NO Timmy?
Top candidates: Baron Davis, Kobe Bryant, T-Mac, Amare Stoudemire

Baron is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he killed fantasy owners everywhere (Dime crew included). The main issue is whether he can remain healthy for an entire season. If he does, then he's in line to have a monster campaign with Golden State. If they sneak into the playoffs behind a healthy Baron, an MVP award is not out of the question.

Kobe's always going to be a viable MVP candidate year in and year out. Last season he and Lamar Odom missed a combined 34 games. You know Kobe's dying to erase the memory of last year's mess and will take it upon his shoulders to get his Lakers back in the mix.

Tracy is in a rare position. This year's Houston squad is arguably the best team he has ever been a part of. They've added Stromile Swift to their frontcourt and Derek Anderson to the backcourt. This should allow Tracy to spend less time initiating the offense and allow him to focus more on scoring. And of course there's always Yao. We know for a fact that Tracy's been keeping up with Yao in the off-season, checking up on his strength and conditioning.

Amare Stoudemire should contend for MVP honors this season in Phoenix. (Barry Gossage???? / Getty Images)

Ahh yes, and then there's Amare. He's one of the most gifted athletes in the game ... period. Last season he put up huge numbers on a squad full of scorers. Had Steve Nash not been so crucial to the team, Amare may have been flaunting that MVP hardware. Amare makes it a point to add weapons to his game in the off-season — last year he showed up with a vastly improved short jumper. What does he have ready to drop on us this season?

6th Man Award
Top candidates: Jerry Stackhouse, Michael Finley, Antoine Walker, James Posey

We have Stack pegged as a potential sixth man because (despite his protests) Avery may want to use his scoring punch off the bench and use newly acquired Doug Christie as the starter. If that happens, then look for Stack to put up numbers similar to last year or better.

Then there's Finley, centerpiece of one of the most intense off-season free agent chases in some time. San Antonio eventually won it, like they do everything else (to the dismay of everybody not from San Antonio). Fin's so coveted because he still has so much game in him. He didn't really have a place in Dallas anymore but he could still start for many teams in the league. He'll be a killer coming off the Spurs' bench.

Miami should stand for "Minutes Is A Major Issue" because it's easier to pick out Earl Boykins in a crowded locker room than to decipher that line-up. Possible scenarios include, Williams, Wade, Walker, Haslem and O'Neal starting. If that's the case, then a healthy James Posey has a great shot at sixth man. If Stan Van Gundy goes with Antoine Walker shimmying off the bench instead of Posey, then 'Toine's got a legit shot at the award.

Coach of the Year Award What NO POP!!!!
Top candidates: Larry Brown, Phil Jackson, Rick Carlisle, Rick Adelman

If Larry Brown can take this Knicks team to the playoffs, he should win the award outright. There's a logjam at the guard position, and there's already pressure to get rookie Nate Robinson some minutes (and we all know how L.B. does with giving rookies burn). Plus, everyone and their mama is expecting a blowup between L.B. and Steph at some point.

On the other coast, Phil is back at it with Kobe. This could be Phil's most challenging gig yet as Shaq is lounging in Miami with Dwyane Wade. Look for ultra-versatile Lamar Odom to become more of a factor with Phil in town. Last season, it never felt like L.O. and his all-around skills were ever being used properly.

Then there are the Ricks — Carlisle and Adelman. Both excellent coaches, each have opportunities to excel in their respective conferences. Carlisle's roster is stacked with a healthy J.O., a returning Ron Artest, rookie Danny Granger and coveted European player, Sarunas Jasikevicius.

Adelman basically has a new team with Bonzi Wells, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and rookie Francisco Garcia. Wells replaces Cuttino Mobley and Abdur-Rahim serves as an upgrade at the power forward spot. In general, the off-season moves were made to change last year's Kings team into a more athletic, offense-oriented squad.

Most Improved Player What NO D.Brown?
Top candidates: Sebastian Telfair, Travis Outlaw, James Posey, Kwame Brown

The Blazers' youth movement is on and poppin' now that Nate's in town and the team has conceded (officially or not) that it's time to rebuild. Look for Sebastian Telfair's numbers to immediately improve as he is now "the man" in Portland, at least at the point position. He may even have extra motivation with the prospect of Jarrett Jack and Steve Blake potentially taking some of his burn. Sticking with the Blazers' youth movement, Travis Outlaw is another potential candidate for most improved. With the uncertainty of whether Darius Miles will ever flourish, Outlaw has an opportunity to surprise.

In Miami, James Posey has a chance at something he couldn't get in Memphis ... consistency. Posey has escaped Memphis and its "hockey line" substitutions. If he finds his niche as a defensive presence with some offensive ability he is sure to solidify a spot in Stan's lineup. This is a good situation for him and maybe an opportunity for him to get that shine and consistent run he couldn't get in Memphis.

Imagine if you will, a bigger, stronger, Jermaine O'Neal ... a scary prospect right? Well, that's what many people thought Kwame Brown was supposed to be when he was drafted right out of high school. We here at Dime believe in second chances and that's exactly what Kwame has, a chance to shed that "bust" label he so dubiously held in Washington. Maybe Kareem can teach him a thing or two. Either way, if there was ever time to shine ... it's now Kwame.

Defensive Player of the Year What NO Bruce!!!?
Top candidates: Ron Artest, Ben Wallace, Andrei Kirilenko

This may be the most mundane award around because as long as Artest, Wallace and Kirilenko are around, this field will remain pretty narrow.

Ron-Ron is back and he's just as hungry as ever. He plays with a nearly unparalleled intensity often unmatched by his opponent.

Then there's Big Ben. You better believe that he's familiar with this award. He has a knack for rebounding and swallowing shots in the paint like he owns it, which he does. Ben is going to be right up there once again, with or without Larry Brown.

Andrei has to be here as well. The league's number one shot-blocker from last season will be back and hopefully healthy enough to carry Utah.

Rookie of the Year
Top candidates: Andrew Bogut, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Gerald Green

Bogut was drafted No. 1 overall for a reason. Anything less than double-digit points and a handful of boards every game will be a disappointment.

Chris Paul has been given the reins to the N'awlins squad and no matter where they play this year, he's going to be a factor. He's quick, he's smart, and he's got a whole lot of heart.

Deron Williams, the other high-profile point man from the draft, is in a similar situation with Utah, where right away he's running the team. He was drafted by the Jazz because they think he'll fit their system perfectly. That's a lot of pressure, but Deron should be fine.

One of our favorite players from this draft class is Gerald Green. From what we've seen of him in summer league play he can jump, he can shoot, and he can handle the ball. The comparisons to T-Mac may not be far off. He's not a favorite for the award though, because he'll most likely start the season in the NBDL. However, if he crushes he could get the call-up quickly.

James Posey was one of the leagues best SF's in 2003-2004, how can he be MIP? On DPOY, it's finally time that Duncan gets some award respect for his defense!

Bowen absolutely needs to be there for DPOY, but the rest, I don't see Duncan getting enough minutes or stats for MVP. Not surprised to see Finley get mentioned for Sixth Man.

The COY list omits Pop, but starts with two coaches who probably won't even get their teams into the playoffs. That alone speaks volumes.

If the Spurs want TD to win his 3rd MVP, they're probably gonna have to win 70 games. Possible but not probable. I hope he just blocks the hell out of everyone and wins the DPOY. It is about time they gave him that award.

Yeah there are more players missing on that list then just Spurs. He didn't give that many good reasons either.

For some strange reason... Baron Davis is always considered a possible MVP candidate... maybe he owns part of Dime Magrag?

i think some of those candidates are fair. kobe, t-mac and amare all have a shot. they all were bustin peoples chops during the regular season. t-mac and amare both played outstandingly in the playoffs. if t-mac can carry his team deep into the semi's he could be considered as the mvp. it would be tougher for amare to get an mvp next year because nash just got one. since when does 2 players from the same team get back to back mvp's?

It's pretty obvious these are his personal favorites, and the writer even says how only the people from SA are the only ones happy with the Finley signing, I suppose that includes him also as one of the unhappy ones that the Spurs are winning titles. I should make my own list.

Too bad Kobe sucks and will never win another award beyond All-NBA 3rd string. You see, to be MVP you not only have to be the Most Vauleable Player on your team, your team also has to be successful at the same time (note that despite great defense and 30 points a game Allen Iverson has not been a top candidate for quite a while now). Since the Lakers will suck balls this year, Kobe would be hard-pressed to even make it into the top 10 candidates.

iverson has won an MVP. we are talking about guys here that haven't won it before. it will be nice to see a new face in that MVP slot.

as you already know kobe has accomplished more than just "3rd" string basketball. he's a 2x all-nba player. 1st team that is. he's only 26 pal. we will see more 1st team seasons from him. sorry to burst your bubble.

tell me. who was 2nd in scoring last year?

Not really, all that will be needed will to have the best regular season record and keep up his consistant numbers. No reason why he won't get It if the above happens.

I made mine about a month ago, in the "Predict how many Spurs make the all-star team" thread:

Bruce will beat out Artest and Big Ben for defensive player
Fin will get 6th man award
Pop will get the COY
Tim MVP (regular season)
Manu MVP (finals)

And then, because the planets will finally be in perfect alignment, there will be peace and harmony throughout the universe (until the free agency period begins).

I thought when Tim sprained his ankle last year he was playing the best defense of his career and at the time was the clearly the best defensive player in the league.

it's too early to discount anyone as a candidate. if he can get playing time, i think oberto has a shot at it.

I don't think so, he won't get enough playing time or touches to rise up his stats enough to get consideration. That doesn't necessarily mean he won't be as valuable to his team as anyone else to theirs, though. I'm confident he'll deliver.

No Tim. How about no Steve Nash? Or Shaq?

The defending MVP and runner-up.

Why does the magazine refer to everyone by their first name? That seems very amateurish.
