Update: Shaq's new contract with Heat

O'NEAL UPDATE

Though the Heat and O'Neal are close to agreeing on a new contract for the franchise center, a deal is not expected to be struck until early next week, after both parties have seen the ratified collective bargaining agreement to make sure the rules are what they expect.

The top priority for the Heat is a new contract for O'Neal, and a source said Wednesday a deal remains imminent. A second source said O'Neal's advisers may be concerned about changes in the new collective bargaining agreement that could affect his new deal and may be gathering more details on the labor pact.

Those issues aren't expected to prevent the Heat and O'Neal reaching an agreement soon. Players other than rookies can't sign contracts until July 22, or later if the new labor deal isn't officially ratified by then.
