Kawhi Leonard was jealous of star treatment received by other 2016 NBA All-Stars

What soured Kawhi Leonard on the Spurs?

Their handling of his injury? Their reluctance to offer a super-max extension this summer? Their delaying of his first big contract?

With Leonard heading to the Raptors, answers still remain elusive. Not long ago, Leonard looked like a perfect fit in San Antonio Ė a seemingly low-maintenance superstar committed to winning. It was hard to imagine a better player to carry the torch from Tim Duncan.

Where did it all go wrong?

Thereís probably no single answer. The injury issues are impossible to dismiss, but they clearly donít stand alone.

Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News:
The first cracks in the low-maintenance veneer came in 2016, when Leonard made his first All-Star game ó in Toronto of all places.

Leonard and his traveling companions noticed other All-Stars ó notably Oklahoma City point guard Russell Westbrook ó were using private luxury cars to get around, instead of the standard transportation provided by the NBA. They wanted the star treatment, too.

Leonardís trip to China in August of 2017 seemed to spark another change in him. Everywhere he went on the NBA ambassador junket, Leonard was mobbed by fans wearing his jersey and other Spurs gear.

ďI was surprised at how many Spurs fans there were, for me not ever going out there,Ē Leonard said upon his return stateside. ďItís just shocking to see how big they support the NBA.Ē

The experience also stuck with Leonardís personal management team, including his uncle, Dennis Robertson. His advisers began to see Leonardís potential as a top-shelf star and global brand.
So the Spurs didnít arrange for Leonard to have a private luxury car during All-Star weekend?

That doesnít mean they didnít take care of their stars. Thatís not the only way for them to give preferential treatment. In particular, theyíre known for letting family on some team flights, and you can bet a player of Leonardís caliber would get more leeway.

That said, Leonard is an elite producer even among stars. I wouldnít blame him for seeking every amenity he can get.

Of course, the question with the notoriously quiet Leonard: Did he ask for more? Did San Antonio even realize Leonard felt unfulfilled in this way? Maybe the Spurs would have accommodated him if he were more vocal.

Leonardís elite basketball play positions him as a potential global brand, but that alone isnít enough. He must build a more marketable image. For now, though, Leonardís strategy appears to be:

1. Alienate everyone Ė David Robinson, Spurs, potential suitors, media, shoe companies
2. ???
3. Profit

Jealousy over who gets the star treatment? What is this, a soap opera? Be careful what you wish for Leonard, it might just come back and bite you. Of course, you poor thing, you didn’t have any Spurs players who were idolized by millions whose names were constantly in the sport tabloids making fools of themselves, nobody the likes of a Westbrook. We only had David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili to mention a few who kept a low profile and were wholesome family types. But the Leonard that everybody knew was a shy gym rat, before this big brouhaha erupted over this mysterious quad injury and the storyline kept playing out in the media, day after day. But I guess you had rabbit ears and listened to the advice of your life and money managers like good old Uncle Dennis who probably saw $$$$ in his future. Maybe the Raptors will put a big star over your locker or maybe give you a separate dressing room and separate you from all the other common players. Remember, star treatment means making yourself available for ‘public’ appearances and autographs for the little kiddies. Don’t sign too many or you might cramp the klaw.

That's basically it as of now. Just hoping a miracle happens and Spurs can get a tangible piece from hopefully trading Gasol's contract ...or Mills mid way through the season. Need some additional flexibility for 2019 if they want to do anything.
