Spurs reportedly give Sixers high price tag for Kawhi Leonard

The 76ers didn’t get LeBron James. James is a Laker.

They didn’t get Paul George.

George stayed with the Thunder.

As for Kawhi Leonard ...

The 76ers, according to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports, have a “strong” interest in Leonard, and the Spurs apparently want to see just how strong it is.

Shultz says the Spurs are asking the Sixers for three future first-round picks and two current players (Schultz’s source wouldn’t name the players).

If the Sixers are going to give up a haul like that for Leonard, then they obviously need to know they can re-sign him long-term. He has one more year left on his deal with San Antonio with a player option for the following season.

Before the James news broke Sunday night, the Sixers’ brass, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, made its pitch to James’ agent Rich Paul. And a key selling point was, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the confidence they had in their chances of landing Leonard.

Now, it appears, as ESPN’s Zach Lowe noted, a matter of whether they’ll meet San Antonio’s asking price.

I think the Spurs are bidding themselves right out of a deal with the Sixers. Since George is staying in OKC, if the Lakers make a deal with Cousins, they just might wait til the summer of 2019 and go after Leonard then and the Spurs will be left holding the bag -- of nothing.
