2017 Draft: Sindarius Thornwell?

I like Sindarius Thornwell or Caleb Swanigan if the Spurs can nab either with their late round picks...

And they're already working out Thornwell:

You look at all the mock draft sites and you see a wide range of players at different positions and most probably aren’t even on the Spurs radar. But I do see with these announcements of players who the Spurs are having scheduled workouts, there’s one common denominator: defense. But the one player I’m pulling for is Jordan Bell, 6’8” PF from Oregon and defensive player of the year in the PAC-12. I watched him and Oregon during this year’s March Madness and his participation in the Chicago NBA Combine. He’s a banger and rebounder. I like both Thornwell and Bell. Shoot, the Spurs probably won't even keep their 1st round pick this year, using it in a trade or something to gain some cap room to sign other seasoned players.

Justin Patton looks like the agile big the Spurs can use to fill Dedmon's spot once he leaves.

I happen to like the Creighton big man too, but unless his stock falls between now and 22 June, he looks to be picked before the Spurs hit the board. All of the mock draft sites that I’ve been looking at have Patton going anywhere between 13 thru 22. If Manu doesn’t let the Spurs know his active/retirement status before draft night, I would think it would put a hitch in the Spurs FO’s priority decision making on what position to draft for. I think they go for the best big man available at the time of their pick, whoever that might be. I think if they go for a guard (#1 or #2), it might mean their priority for going after CP3 might not be that great, IMHO of course.

To add a caveat to all that I've said above, the Spurs have a few of their earlier draft picks (Nikola Milutinov, Adam Hanga and Nemanja Dangubic) coming to town for workouts. Of the three, I think Hanga wins a spot on the roster and Dangubic looks pretty darn good shooting and handling the ball for a guy 6’9”, from the Youtube videos I’ve seen. Milutnov looks a little slow and awkward at times. Just a thought.

As of today, Draftexpress.com had the Spurs mock draft picks as Ivan Rabb from Cal and Thornwell. I'd be a real happy camper if that actually came to pass...add Hanga to that mix and you get youth, defensive wings, and an athletic big all at the same time.
