Spurs Name Becky Hammon Assistant Coach

Spurs Name Becky Hammon Assistant Coach
Posted: Aug 05, 2014

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Becky Hammon has been hired as an assistant coach. Per club policy terms of the contract were not announced.

Hammon, who is currently in her 16th WNBA season, announced on July 23 that she would retire as a player at the conclusion of the 2014 season. Named one of the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All-Time in July of 2011, Hammon ranks seventh in WNBA history in points (with 5,809), fourth in assists (1,687) and sixth in games (445).

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

A six-time WNBA All-Star, Hammon has spent the last eight seasons with the San Antonio Stars. She is the Stars all-time leader in assists (1,112) and three-point field goals made (493) while ranking second in franchise history in points (3,442) and games (218). In 2012 Hammon was the top vote getter for the Stars All-Decade Team.

In her WNBA career Hammon has appeared in 445 regular season games, averaging 13.1 points, 3.8 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 28.0 minutes. She has earned All-WNBA First Team honors twice (in 2007 and 2009) and was named to the All-WNBA Second Team in 2005 and 2008.

A three-time All-American at Colorado State, Hammon went unpicked in the 1999 WNBA Draft. She signed with the New York Liberty in May of 1999 and spent eight seasons with the Liberty before being traded to the Stars in a draft night deal in 2007.

At least in terms of diversity, this is a great hire. I'm not terribly familiar with the WNBA as a whole, but I've heard previously that Hammon is a very heady player with an extremely high basketball I.Q. I hope she does well and that it benefits the Spurs in some way. Congrats Becky!

WNBA is all about ball movement and team play. Silver Stars are part of the Spur family, so Becky has plenty of corporate knowledge.

The pick is unorthodox but could turn out to be brilliant. Years ago, the Spurs led the league into recognizing the international pool of top players. Spurs seem to be taking the lead again. What a savvy organization!

Isn't this the first female assistant in the league, and I mean NBA not NBDL? Either way, kudos to the Spurs. They continue to be pioneers for the NBA.

Good for her. Be interesting to see what kind of role she plays in the upcoming season...

She has a good basketball IQ and professional experience, eventhough it might be in the WNBA, is already part of the Spurs family, as someone above said by playing with the Stars, and travelled with the team last year to observe so she has a foot up on any new coach coming into the Spurs organization. The Spurs organization is constantly voted one of the top, if not ‘the’ top franchise in all sports and they always seem to break new ground for the NBA so bringing in the first, I assume, female NBA assistant coach is only fitting. Besides, having 'Spurs assistant coach' on anybody’s resume seems to strike gold these days in the NBA. Congrats to the Spurs and welcome aboard Becky Hammon, may you both have a very successful season ahead.

Is there a limit on number of assistant coaches? Jim Boylen, Ime Udoka, Chip Engelland, Chad Forcier, Seans Marks, Ettore Messina and now Becky Hammon. Isn't Marks projected to step up to a higher management position? Maybe there is something going on or another move that we haven't heard about yet.

Could have sworn I read somewhere that Marks was indeed moving up in the organization into more of an administrative role. Can't find the article now

The day and the announcement are still young. Patience.

She's the first full-time employed assistant coach, Cleveland had female assistant for part of a season. Though it sounds more like what Hammond did last year with the Spurs where she spent time with the coaches and got the experience.

A good way for her to get immediate coaching experience. It would've been another whole year before she would've been able to join a WNBA coaching staff. If she wants to be a head coach in the WNBA, there's probably not a better resume builder than to say you were on Pop's bench. If she has the desire to lead a NBA team, she gains credibility by having coached with the Spurs.

I think this is a great thing!

She is smart, loves the game, and seems eager to learn from her experience.

Lets face it, this move also helps in the court of public opinion too. The media is already brainstorming their first halftime show story about her. It may actually help make this team media darlings (or rather, more so than before).

Ultimately, this move is not about breaking barriers, sexual politics, or anything else. Spurs thought she'd be a great addition. This is going to be great for her!

I don't know the answer to the number of coaches but maybe Pop is paranoid that Boylen and Udoka could get grabbed up at any time the way things have gone the past few years. I guess the absolute limit would come when there are no more seats left on airplanes for road trips. It never hurts to have more eyes with different perspectives observing players in practice.

Marks wanted to go back to front office. There is no limit on coaches, only coaches on the bench. Jaques Vaughn was officially an assistant I think and sat behind the bench. I think Messina gets Marks' bench spot and Hammon will probably sit behind. Anybody remember Don Nelson's staff in Dallas? I think they had like 8 assistants at one point.
