Most of my friends are fans of other teams. They are legit jealous. They say they have no idea what it feels like to root for a team that is competing for a championship. I tell them I have no idea what it's like to not.

I am glad I listened to my daughter in 1999 and became an avid Spur fan.
Thanks Mombear for sharing this article with us.

Great article by Dan Oshinsky and thanks to Mom for posting. It's refreshing, to me at least, to see non-Spurs fans at this time of year scratching their heads and wondering how the hell does this 'older than dirt' team keep playing so well year after year and showing up in the NBA finals so much. You can point to the rich history of the Spurs, from the Dallas Chapparals to the revival by SA businessmen like Angel Drosses and Red McCombs and moving the Spurs to San Antonio to players like George Gervin, Artis Gilmore, James Silas, David Robinson, Tim Duncan and the present core of players, to the men who bring these guys together like Coach Pop and RC Buford and the Spurs scouts and management staff, among the best in sports today. There's an unseen professionalism displayed by the players and staff that few teams see on an every day basis but we, as loyal Spurs fans, do. They have a dedication to the sport and to those who lend support to their ventures. But there's something that non-Spurs fans have to remember --- we have an open door policy and there's always room on the Spurs bandwagon to jump on. There's no timeline and admission fee, just love and support and criticize, if you will, their play and stand behind them as if they were your own family. Funny thing is, they are family and I miss them terribly during the off season and wait anxiously for the upcoming training camp and next season to come. We love our Spurs and being in Italy right now on vacation, seeing my newly born granddaughter for the first time and also seeing my oldest granddaughter graduate from high school, I anxiously await the Finals and will stay up til 3-4am local to watch the games streamed live here. And I proudly wear my Spurs t-shirt wherever I can. GO SPURS GO!!!

Oh yeah, we (Spurs' fans) need to remember that. Shoot, I'm grateful that they're in the NBA & having four (should have been five & going for six!) championships. I bet fans from different teams will learn something from watching San Antonio Spurs.

lucky indeed.

Amazingly since 1984 there have been 8 teams to win the NBA championship. All but Dallas has won multiple times.

Personally, I'd say pretty damn lucky. In 1997, the Spurs had the 3rd worst record but won the lottery's 1st pick and eventually chose Duncan. If that didn't happen and Boston had gotten that 1st pick, no one can accurately predict where the Spurs would be today. I bless my lucky stars it turned out the way it did and put San Antonio on the NBA map and history to stay.

1995, 2001, and 2013 were tough years, but we've had more than our fair share of great years. Go Spurs!

So, so true.

But honestly, hasn't this franchise ALWAYS been like this? Gervin to Robinson to Duncan.

The post Gervin/pre Robinson era was pretty bleak (1985-1989)
