Which Reserve Will Step Up During Round Two?

Fortified by the league’s highest-scoring bench, the Spurs’ depth was perhaps their greatest strength during the regular season. But with the exception of Manu Ginobili, Kawhi Leonard and Tiago Splitter, the rest of the supporting cast — starter Danny Green and reserves Boris Diaw, Patty Mills and Marco Belinelli — struggled through much of their first-round victory over Dallas.

As such, the Spurs averaged just 37 points off the bench in the series, almost eight points less than the regular season. The drop would have been even lower had Ginobili not enjoyed his highest-scoring series since 2008 with 124 points in seven games (17.7 per).

Green and Diaw actually came around late in the series, and ended up shooting 58 and 54 percent, respectively. Mills — who did have provide some solid non-scoring moments with his hustle — and Belinelli struggled pretty throughout, however, as they both shot less than 40 percent.

They could be in store for an improvement by simple default as Portland enters their second-round series with perhaps the NBA’s least effective bench, ranking 30th in scoring and 27th in production differential.

Blazers coach Terry Stotts went to his reserves as little as possible in the first round against Houston. Only Mo Williams played a significant role as starters Damian Lillard (44.7), Nicolas Batum (43.0), LaMarcus Aldrdige (41.2) and Wesley Matthews (39.8.) all logged heavy minutes.

Mills will need to leave it all out on the court, in every game, regardless of how few minutes he gets.

He'll need to use his speed and hustle to make Lillard work as hard as possible.

Of course, that goes for the whole team. But Mills has more speed than Green , Belinelli, and probably Joseph.

I hope Manu continues to be a factor, but in order for us to move past Portland we need help from Belinelli and Mills too!

I'm looking for Marco to step up in this series, I think he feels like he needs to show his potential and wants to contribute. He is a competitor and the spurs team in General were a bit off. I actually think we will be done with the blazers in 5 games. 6 the most. Our bench here will be the difference.

I agree with MrJ, it's got to be a unified group effort by the entire bench. They proved that the Spurs had the best bench in the league during the regular season so whomever comes off that bench has to setup and play their role.

Halleluah!! But you gotta know that Portland is going to come back with their own adjustments and better their 38% FGP and their 3 point FGP (35%). But if we continue to play the swarming, help defense we employed Tuesday night, limit our turnovers again and keep Aldridge off the boards and stay in front of Lillard, we'll take the wins when they come. And keep bringing Baynes in to bang a little more Pop. He's got 6 fouls to waste and can bruise a few Blazers along the way. We need that kind of motivation off the bench to kick start our offense and defense. Go Spurs!!

Great quote I saw today that exemplifies the Spurs:

"Watch long enough and you realize that these things aren't really luck. They all fall under the umbrella of basketball. Good basketball takes every twist that favors you and magnifies it. Bad basketball takes every twist that favors you and throws it down the drain. Franchises that play good basketball eventually learn how to make those breaks happen and take full advantage. Franchises that play bad basketball blame the results on everything but themselves as if fortune were the only thing determining the outcome of a given game."
