Spurs' Assistants are 91-180 this season as Head Coaches
or in other words . . . unless they are bringing Spurs' players with them - don't hire them. They aren't Pop.

To be fair, they were put in to rebuild. So this was kind of expected. This wasn't Phil or even Doc, where the coach is thrown into a group of stars and managed to get them to play championship ball. That being said, these guys are probably still not the same caliber as Pop. Pop chose his personnel and coached them too.

pessimist 03-20-14 02:09 PM

Good points. I still think all of these guys are just that though . . . assistants.

Truth be told, where would Pop and Spurs basketball be today if Boston had won that 1st draft choice when Duncan was picked? The sun has shined on SA and the Spurs from that day forward. Every situation doesn’t have a happy ending, but I’d like to see how Orlando (Vaughn), Philly (B.Brown), Atlanta (Budenholzer) and New Orleans (Williams) are doing in a couple years when they get their young studs more experience. I didn’t throw Tom Thibodeau and Mike Brown in there since they’ve been around a while.

Thib has built a Spur-like grinder team in ChiTown. Nobody wants to play them. Not his fault that his best player hasn't been on the court in two years.

Mike Brown has no clue on offense.

Way too early to evaluate the others, although time will start ticking on Williams by next season.

What is the connection between Thib and Pop?

Thib and Pop were not in San Antonio at the same time.

alh1020 03-20-14 05:04 PM

My apologies. Thib was an assistant coach in SA from 1992-94, while Pop was here from 1988-92 under Larry Brown, then moving on to Golden State under Nelson and then returned to SA the summer of 1994 to take over the GM/ VP Ops for the Spurs. Coach Thibodeau's itinerary is at the link below.

being fair...

how many W and L for spurs team coached by assistant (because pop absence or ejection)?

Spurd_On 03-20-14 06:48 PM

In my opinion, Mike Brown is the only one who has been given full opportunity so far and he is not head coach material. Injuries, a weak or young core of talent and lousy owners have so far held back the others from the opportunity to accumulate winning records. They will get their chance if the owners have the patience and understanding.

This thread is way to early, as every single team an assistant has gone to shall we say does not want to miss out on the lottery......

And then to say without Duncan Pop is nothing is very pess... too easy but the point remains that the Spurs has remained at the top of the league with 1 lottery pick for 15 + years. Other than the greatest PF of all time falling into our lap the Spurs have worked for every other player at the backend of the draft and role players.

Now TP and Manu have worked out very well to create a big three that is obviously needed these days, but they only happened by good planning..... and then the off/def system that makes our too old too boring team compete with teams built on allstars to take us down.

Long winded reply but I get tired of watching every armchair GM belittle a HOF coach/front office who have given the basis for Spurs fans to take for granted playing in June and competing for a ring that 3/4's of the league haven't ever had a chance to do...... and all done in a small marketplace not even biggest in our state.
