Spurs have notched 50th win for 15th straight season

Sunday night the San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz, 122-104. With that they are 50-16 on the season, the best record in the NBA.

The last time the San Antonio Spurs didnít win 50 games in a season everyone was worried about the Y2K bug and people for some reason freaked out at ďThe Blair Witch Project.Ē

That was 1989Ö and really itís not accurate in spirit to say the Spurs didnít win 50 games that season. They went 37-13 that lockout season ó play at that winning percentage out over 82 games and the Spurs would have 60 games (and they won the NBA title that season).

More accurately the last time the Spurs didnít win 50 was the 1996-97 season, the year the Spurs won just 20 games so Brian Hill was pushed aside for Gregg Popovich.

That is 17 straight seasons with at least 50 wins.

That is ridiculous.

Itís been said on every sports Web site and a few others, but this is THE model organization in professional sports.

Yes, itís a tribute to players like Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and countless role players. Itís a tribute to smart drafting.

More than that itís a tribute to the organization and the culture that GM R.C. Buford and Popovich have built ó there is a reason other teams have been poaching Spurs front office for years. The on the court systems have been tweaked over the years ó they used to be all defense, now even Popovich uses some stuff from the Mike DíAntoni playbook ó but the ability to find players that fit what they do, then develop those guys and fit them in, has not.

They go out and get guys like Marco Belinelli, knowing that he has been an okay fit in other systems but would blend in better with what they do. Patty Mills, Danny Green and a host of other guys the same way, then they develop them.

Besides the year they tanked to get Timmy and the shortened season, they've had 50 wins since the 93-94 season. And only 6 losing seasons since coming to SA in 1973. Very proud of this franchise.

Yea, I saw that. I would think a fat finger or he misread his notes. Spurs were 20-62 in '96-'97, 56-26 in '97-'98 (TD's first year), then 37-13 in '98-'99 in their 1st championship season. But I will echo Uwe's comment......"very proud of this franchise". Amen brother!

More of an Uhhh... Brian Hill!! He coached in Orlando. Bob Hill coached the Spurs.

Nothing against those that have become fans during the Duncan era or even the Robinson era, but us "old heads" realize that this franchise has been excellent for years. Didn't win championships during the Gervin era but always fielded a competitive team - having only missed the playoffs 4 times since coming into existence in 1973.

To be the only team in the league to have a tied or winning record against every team in existence in the league says alot about the franchise and its history.

I have a different perception/memory of all that and I may be wrong. Wasn't the team trying to get by without Drob that season who was sidelined? As I recall I enjoyed the season as the remaining Spurs were fighting so hard against insurmountable odds. Yes they were losing but they were fighting hard. As to acquiring Tim Duncan and the first pick, I can't imagine that even in their wildest dreams they thought they would get the first pick. Well....maybe in their wildest dream.

That was kind of a joke. There was no way they could have planned to get Timmy that year. Just ask Boston.

The Spurs have been in the playoffs more times in their franchise history than any other pro sports team during the same time period.

That's legit.

We have more to be proud of in San Antonio than any other fans.

Since the ABA/NBA merger the Spurs also have the fewest lottery teams of any NBA team. Newby teams like OKC excluded That's on Drossos, Bruise Bros., McCombs, Ice, DROB, Bass, McDermott, et al even before Holt, Pop, RC and Tim and Co. brought the LOB's home.

It's been great to be a Spurs fan for a hell of a long time.

Also Tim, Tony, and Manu are 2nd on the list of winning games by a trio.
