Knicks could target Parker in 2015

Having whiffed in the LeBron James sweepstakes, and the 2013-14 season already circling the drain at 9-19, the Knicks have set their sights on the summer of 2015, when their plans could include a certain French All-Star from San Antonio.

Per a recent report by ESPNís Brian Windhorst, the Knicks hope to not only bring back their own aging All-Star, Carmelo Anthony, but to sign as many as two from a crop of free-agent targets that include Tony Parker. Also on their wish list ó with the emphasis on wish ó are Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Roy Hibbert, Marc Gasol and Rajon Rondo.

It promises to be an interesting juncture in Parkerís career. Not only will he be looking for what will likely be his last significant payday at 33, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili ó whom he will have played with for 14 and 13 seasons, respectively ó will probably retire, leaving him as the last remaining pillar from the championship years should he choose to return. Then thereís the matter of coach/mentor Gregg Popovich, who will be 66 at that point.

For a worldly, cosmopolitan soul like his, New York City ó the site of his nearly tragic eye injury two summers ago ó could be a dream location. At the same time, the Knicks have been mismanaged tabloid fodder for more than a decade now. In other words, pretty much the opposite of the Spurs, the only team Parker has ever known.

Having stated his hopes of playing until heís 38, at which point he will have played in the NBA for 20 years, itís hard to imagine Parker in any other uniform.

Heís already proven his loyalty to the Spurs, signing a pair of extensions for less than market value to remain in San Antonio. Parker spoke before the start of the 2012-13 season of his hope that the Spurs will reciprocate during the latter stage of his career. Then there was his declaration that San Antonio is home in a 2012 Sports Illustrated feature.

There are almost no sure things in NBA free agency, particularly with the opportunity to sign a huge deal in a glamour market. But itís difficult to imagine Parker would view the woebegone Knicks as a desirable option given what heís become accustomed to in San Antonio.

...as well as every other team that doesn't have a premier veteran point guard. I guess if you put the word "Knicks" in the subject line you get more hits.

I remember when Stoudemire signed with NY and told the press that he was going to surround himself with all his buds, ie., Anthony, Parker and a few others. That sure went well, the Knicks future continues to look bright.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Parker leave for New York in 2 years, especially if Popovich retires.

Especially if the Knicks are willing to give Parker a larger than life contact...cause that's what New York does. But if Melo isn't there... Good luck!

I think at the time that signed he got market value at best because at the time he signed he wasn't even playing that well. Seemed most of it had to do with his off the court issues. Could he leave sure? But didn't he make a recent comment about playing 20 years with the Spurs? Signs point that he will stay.

Unless things just go really south, or maybe Pop leaves, I think he'll stay.

Who knows. But I doubt TP will want to leave if the Knicks are as jacked up as they are now.
