It’s something a lot of fans do not realize — there is precious little real practice time during an NBA season. There are film sessions and walk throughs, of course the shootarounds, but teams can go weeks without an actual practice, and usually it is just one.
Take the San Antonio Spurs for example, Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News asked Gregg Popovich the last time the team practiced
Asked to recall the last practice, Popovich furrowed his brow, scratched his head and gave up.
“I can’t remember,” he said.
In fact, the last real practice was Nov. 19, during a stretch of four days without a game after returning from a victory in Utah and preceding a home win over Boston.
That’s before Thanksgiving. Yes there were off days in that stretch where Popovich could have scheduled a practice but knowing his older team he has given them rest days instead. Wise move.
Expect a little run out of the Spurs as they have 13 of their next 16 games at home, with time in there to even have a few practices. That should make Popovich relatively happy.
