Spurs sign Sam Young

Project Spurs - A San Antonio Spurs Blog and Podcast | Report: Spurs sign free agent Sam Young

Written by Jeff Garcia on*Wednesday, 25 September 2013

Earlier this month, the*San Antonio Spurs and free agent Sam Young met*but according to*Real GM, the Spurs and Young have reached anagreement.Drafted by the Grizzlies in the 2009 Draft, Young has played for Memphis, the 76ers and last season with the Pacers. He is 6"6', 220 lbs., 28-years old and has NBA career averages of 5.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and shot 44 percent.*Young averaged 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds last season with the Indiana Pacers off the bench.*He is a energy-type player and would be a nice role player off the bench. Not to mention, he is a swingman and can play in the front court and back court if needed. However, Young could simply be a training camp signing.*With the signing of Young, expect San Antonio to sign a few more players for training camp which is set to open in Colorado next month.*Thoughts Spurs fans?

Nice training camp signing. If nothing else, his energy might make everyone else train harder.

I like it. I think he is the 15th guy, but will likely see some fairly regular rotation time.

I think that's a decent signing if we keep him.

Is 6'6" 220 undersized for a F/G? He's not a PF.

Lebron is what? 6'8" 250? And he's an animal!!!

Personally, I think Sam Young could work out well for the Spurs. Since he has mainly been known for his defensive abilities, it is probably assumed that when heís used, heíll probably spell Leonard with spot duty. During his stint in the NBA he hasnít shown too much on the offensive side but with the Spurs and how they spread the floor, if Young has any kind of outside shot, he could also provide some key offense when needed. Remember, when Bowen came to the Spurs, he was mainly known for his lockdown defense and worked to improve his perimeter shooting Ė maybe Young can do the same. Thereís a lot of maybeís with this guy and Iím sure Coach Jim Boylen has filled RC and Pop in on what Youngís capable of doing. And filling the 15th spot on the roster, he can only go up on the Spurs scale or hit the highway. Like Leonard, I hope Young raises some eyebrows and finds a home in SA.

He appears to be the 2nd player picked up by the Spurs based on a recommendatin by Boylen. Sure hope he's right in his assesment of their talent levels.

If this guy makes the roster, I think it would be great.

This guy can guard Labron. He is strong.

I like him better than . . . . I don't know. . . . Turkaglu.

I think it may preclude a trade with either Young and/or a guard or two.

It is being reported elsewhere that Spurs have also signed Cory Magetti. Maybe we better get a bigger bus?

I saw somewhere that Bibby declined the invitation because of injury.

I think that is what they list Lebron at, however I have also heard many announcers say he is closer to 275... hes a big boy no matter how you slice it though...

True, I've heard LeBron described as essentially the same size as Karl Malone....except with y'know.....that athletic ability. :shocked

If you remember when he visited Cowboys camp about 2 weeks ago, there were pics of him standing next to Demarcus Ware, who is listed around 260, and LeBron definitely weighs more then D. Ware...

Yes. Jordan, 6-6, Kobe,6-6, Reggie Miller, 6-5/6-6, Harden 6-5, Ray Allen 6-5. Just a few. Pippen 6-7/6-8, Larry Bird 6-8/6-9, Danny Granger 6-8, Carmelo 6-8, Beasley 6-10, A.I.,6-7. Just a few. When I think SF, and match ups, I see guys 6-7 to 6-9, per say AK47. Yeah you can get away with it now a days with all the small ball, but putting a 6-5/6 guy on these hybrid SF's is brutal. It's just the Spurs always get undersized guys when it comes to the 3,4,5 position. Give me length, or give me death.
