Spurs hire respected scout Dave Telep

The San Antonio Spurs, long innovators in NBA front-office operations, have hired well-respected prep recruiting analyst Dave Telep, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Telep will work in a scouting coordinator role for the NBA draft under GM R.C. Buford, sources said.

Telep had recently left a job as an analyst for a cable television network, where he had grown his sizable reputation in the basketball community as one of the game's most knowledgeable and trusted talent evaluators.

Telep's strong relationships in the high school and college basketball ranks should provide the Spurs with excellent information in future NBA drafts.

Buford's hiring of Telep comes weeks after one of his front office protégées, Utah Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey, made another astute, out-of-the-box hiring with Justin Zanik as assistant general manager. Zanik was a player agent for ASM Sports and Andy Miller.

Wonder why the Spurs are going to start looking closer at US kids?

Maybe our scouting resources stateside have grown weak over the years spent combing the Euro leagues. With Duncan coming down the home stretch, maybe the FO want to cover their bases and be able to snag that ‘diamond in the rough’ player. I watched a few of those televised AAU/high school summer all-star games and was surprised how mature some of these kids play. Maybe the Spurs have their eye on someone who could be cultivated for the future. A lot of maybe’s trying to guess the RC/Pop playbook.

I would say that that is a pretty good guess especially with Duncan and Ginobili on the back ends of their careers. Foreign players are good to have for the Spurs system and they seem to have mastered their acquisition but Kawhi is the best most recent pickup. They will need more acquisitions like Kawhi in the very near future coming from the rookie ranks. They are not going to rebuild with marquee players and they are not likely to get early first round picks unless they trade for them.

Watched the video and immediately thought, 'he'll fit in well, talks in a monotone and I had the feeling he didn't want to be anywhere near the camera' should be really good behind the scenes.

I have also posted this in the player evolutions thread but in relation to Telep, it mentions what he brings to the Spurs and why.
