Tony Parker set for MRI after injuring knee

Tony Parker set for MRI after injuring knee in exhibition while playing for French national team

It wasn’t all that long ago that NBA teams would strongly suggest to their international players that they turn down the opportunity to represent their country in global basketball events held during the offseason.

With so many players from outside the United States now in the league, though, along with the fact that contracts of teams’ best players are insured against injury, that practice has ended, for the most part.

But when you hear of players suffering injuries in international play — especially during exhibitions — well, you can see where team personnel might be coming from.
From Dan McCarney of the San Antonio Express-News:
Details were extremely limited, but French sports daily L’Equipe reported that Spurs point guard Tony Parker is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday after injuring his right knee for the second time in exhibition play leading up to next month’s EuroBasket tournament.
The injury does not appear to be serious. … The injury was not referenced in a wire story about the game, nor did Parker address it in comments published by L’Equipe.
We’ll hope for the best where Parker is concerned, but the Spurs can’t be happy with even a slight injury to their All-Star point guard, considering that he was playing at less than 100 percent during the team’s Finals matchup with the Heat a little over two months ago.

The injury does not appear to be serious. Parker was hurt at some point during France’s 85-84 loss to rival Spain in Montpellier. He scored 26 of his 29 points in the second half, but missed a 3-pointer at the end. Parker Cleared after MRI

Spurs point guard Tony Parker said he’ll be “100 percent” for the upcoming EuroBasket championships after an MRI revealed no significant damage from an undisclosed knee injury suffered Monday during France’s exhibition loss to Spain.

Parker released a comment via the France national team’s Twitter account (translated via Google):

“I am not worried, I’ll be 100 percent for the Euro. I approach the competition with confidence. After the MRI this morning I follow proper care. It does not affect the next game preparation.”

Team director Patrick Beesley also made a statement on Twitter, describing Parker’s second injury to his right knee during tournament run-up as “nothing serious.”

Parker was hurt as some point during Monday’s 85-84 loss to Spain, in which he scored 29 points. It did not appear serious even before the MRI, with no mention by Parker or the media barring a small blurb on the web site of French sports daily L’Equipe. There was no indication of exactly what the injury was.

EuroBasket 2013 will be held Sept. 4-22 in Slovenia. Spurs training camp begins Oct. 1.

Don't give a rat's @#$ if he's 100 percent for those Euro Championships, he needs to be 100 percent for the team that pays his freakin' bills, getting sick and tired of this garbage.

You get no argument from me on that. And I would assume that if TP, or any other NBA player in that case, were to get hurt in these games, their parent team, to whom they have a contract with, would probably have to flip the hospital bill for necessary health care coverage and rehabilitation. I would think there would have to be a clause in their contract to protect the parent club in cases like this, if it’s not already included, ie, forfeiture of pay, etc etc. But then you open up a possible scenario where the player feels he’s not appreciated and backed by his parent club and demands a trade thru the media. Catch-22.

It is what it is. Can't say I do care any bit about France NT or any other NT but USA. I do respect all other NT's and players!

TP will be happy when he participate even if he got minor set backs, he will mentally feel better as he at least participated in that NT this summer.

I am sure the Spurs coaching staff and Pop are just nervous as hell for TP and will bring him back if he got any serious injuries.

I am just hoping TP will use his best judgement and NOT put himself in Danger if he has injury that might get worse with playing and to stop right there and think for the future rather the instant moment.

Go Spurs Go!
