Sources: Mavs, DeJuan Blair close

By Marc Stein | ESPN.com

DALLAS -- The Mavericks are closing in on the signing of free-agent big man DeJuan Blair, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks -- who remain one of six finalists for the services of Greg Oden -- are in advanced talks to add Blair to a revamped rotation of frontcourt sidekicks for Dirk Nowitzki.

With one source saying Tuesday that a deal looks "promising," the former Spurs center appears poised to join new projected starting center Samuel Dalembert and the re-signed duo of Brandan Wright and Bernard James in a posse of centers to play alongside Nowitzki after Dallas lost out to Houston in the Dwight Howard sweepstakes.

Blair's exit from San Antonio has been anticipated for some time after his increasing struggles to earn playing time from Spurs coach Gregg Popovich last summer.

The Spurs did explore deals for Blair before the league's annual trade deadline in February but ultimately kept him and used him sparingly in the playoffs. The 6-foot-7, 265-pounder -- who slipped to No. 37 in the 2009 draft because of a history of knee troubles dating to high school -- averaged just 5.4 points and 3.8 rebounds in 14 minutes per game last season.

Blair also logged just less than 18 minutes of court time in three appearances in the NBA Finals against Miami.

Although the Mavericks are essentially restricted to offering minimum contracts at this point in the summer after making a number of signings post-Howard, they continue to hold out hope that Oden will decide that Dallas is the ideal place to launch his comeback under the watch of longtime Team USA trainer Casey Smith and team doctor Tarek Souryal.

Sources close to the process told ESPN.com that Oden is scheduled to receive formal offers this week detailing both the financial specifics as well as the medical care available from the six teams that have been chasing him all month: Miami, San Antonio, New Orleans, Atlanta, Sacramento and Dallas. Oden is then expected to choose his new team this week.

Haha have fun DB. Hope you're happy :)

That's all about some inside espionage info they hope to get from DB. Must be a straight up sign for him, cause no way in hell Dallas deals with SA!

So much for the sign/trade scenario with the Wizards.

Good luck to DeJuan - I've always thought his ideal situation would be to play alongside a stretch 4 such as Nowitzki. He should be able to accentuate positives and hide deficiencies better.

Hahaha "big man", FA sounds better

MichaelWi101 07-30-13 04:19 PM

Wish him nothing but the best (except against the Spurs of course), ad since there's no D in allas, he shouldn't have trouble adapting to their team.

they are losing all their rappers.........lol

Very smart move for Dallas.

The contract is for one year and that means Blair will play for his new contract. He will play with much more intensity and try to prove his value. Mavs will get benefit of it.

For Blair side, it's not a bad move. Next year there won't be too much popular free-agents in the market but there will be 30 MLE. If he plays well and wouldn't face with a serious injury; he can get a good contract next summer.

Not a done deal. Pelicans and Wizards are still in the mix.

Well, how about that, a ray of sunshine is still shining on SA, for a while. Since the Spurs haven't moved forward on this, I assume they are still waiting for Oden to make up his mind. Then too, since some reports say that Oden has slimmed down his choices or is leaning toward either the Heat or New Orleans, I again have to assume the Pelicans are waiting for Oden too. I guess we'll all have to wait til Oden flips a coin to see who's got heads or tails.

Lets get this $hit over with. Damn you Oden for holding us up. I am praying the FO is working behind the scenes with Mo Williams or a backup sf

Hell yeah.... I'm already sick of Oden! For a guy who hasn't played in 4 years and had the second half of the season, playoffs and damn near all free agency...should know exactly where the hell he wants to go. It boils down to 2 things, money or chance to win a ring. You want to party and be in the spotlight.. Go to Miami, you want to learn from the greatest pf ever, have your minutes managed perfectly and stay out of the spotlight... Spurs. Or you go play in the sand box with the rest of the young guys...New Orleans. Lebron might not even be there after this year,San Antonio has the longevity and history of winning, and will continue...with of without him. And the Pelicans, hell... They can't keep a team name and aren't going to be relevant in the West for a long time. So like my man spurduncan21 said, "Hurry the hell up!"

alh1020 07-31-13 04:40 PM

Amen. We're burnin' daylight.
