Paul George says Larry Bird can still shoot the rock

Kurt Helin, Jul 22, 2013, 4:09 PM EDT

Larry Bird was the ultimate gym rat player. He simply seemed like he could knock down any shot — open or contested, he could create just enough space to get a look and he didn’t need much. They guy could just shoot. Still can, apparently.

Nima Zarrabi of SLAM caught up with Indiana’s Paul George before the ESPYs last week and George told this story (hat tip to All Ball).
SLAM: I believe you had talked about seeing Larry shoot in the gym.
PG: He picked a ball up that had rolled over. He rolled up his sleeves and made about 15 in a row and just walked out like nothing just happened. It was the craziest thing I’ve seen.

SLAM: How did you and the rest of the team react?
PG: We were speechless. We didn’t know whether to keep shooting or just to end practice. It was sweet, man.
The only thing that could have made that better is Bird looking at the team and saying, “Which one of you is going to come in second?”

Larry is still a legend.

That's a refreshing story. He probably sees Larry Bird around the clubhouse all the time but he only knows of him as having been an intangible legend who now walks around in a sport jacket and does business-like things.

Nice to see a legend still able to show why he was a legend and put young players in awe. They will never think of him the same way again when he walks into a room.

Why would Larry forget how to shoot?

There's a scene in the Nick Nolte movie BLUE CHIPS. He's having a conversation with a character played by Boston Celtic legend Bob Cousy (well into his dotage). While he's playing the scene, Cousy sinks a dozen or so consecutive free throws. No big deal.

Much like the scene from Hoosiers where the coach measures the height of the basketball goal when they get to the state championship game. The goal is still 10 FT off the ground and whether its a backyard hoop or an arena, shooters will always be able to shoot. Chris Mullin, Reggie Miller and others can still shoot the rock. I'd bet Fat @$$ Chuck Person can still shoot it.
