Manu Ginobili apologizes for ‘completely black out’ against Jazz

With the San Antonio Spurs leading the Utah Jazz 90-87 and five seconds remaining Friday, Manu Ginobili was caught between guarding Marvin Williams (a 34 percent 3-point shooter) and Randy Foye (a 40 percent 3-point shooter) on the perimeter.

Instead of sticking with either, Ginobili double-teamed Al Jefferson (a 13 percent 3-point shooter who was standing inside the arc anyway), leaving Danny Green to cover both Williams and Foye.

Jefferson kicked it Foye, who passed to a wide-open Marvin Williams in the corner as Green closed on Foye. Of course, Williams hit the 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.
Ginobili, via Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News:
“I don’t know what I was thinking to completely black out,” Ginobili said. “A terrible mistake. I’m disappointed. I’m sorry I let my teammates down. We could have lost the game and, hopefully, I don’t do it ever again.
“Today we won it but in a playoff game it could have been even elimination. I’m very sorry and it was an awful distraction.”
Ginobili made up for the mistake by making his only shot in overtime, a 3-pointer that gave the Spurs the lead for good, and grabbing a couple contested rebounds in the extra period – yet he still apologized. It’s unfair to expect perfection from Ginobili, but some of his success can be explained by him expecting it from himself.

poor little thing....

OK he is forgiven, now find your shot again please.

Uwe Blab 03-25-13 01:50 AM

That's the ONLY defensive mistake he's apologizing for? His gambles don't pay off half the time and he's constantly getting beat off the dribble.

how bout the blackout against Hou???? Where is the apology for that? He's been playing horrible lately. Hopefully, he will find his shot for these next four big games :thumb

The entire team - save for TP, TD and Kawhi - have seemed to be in some sort of funk over the last two weeks. Hard to explain. For example, last night Danny Green gets a steal with 1:29 left in the game and up 4pts, and decides to go 1 on 2 for a layup. Shot gets blocked and Parsons hits wide open 3 due to poor transition defense. Pull the ball out, run clock and get a good look. At minimum you are up 4 with 1:05 or so left and the chance to play solid defense which you've done for the past 6 HOU offensive possessions.

Several boneheaded plays at the most inopportune times...

Looks like I've been missing some action =)

Danny completely sucks finishing at the rim, so when I saw him try to take it in, I had a feeling it wouldnt be good. Danny is purely a shooter and defintely needs to work in the offseason on finishing at the rim.

Haha, at least Green is better than Bowen going to the rim, lol

last year he tried to do that more than this year and he still sucked. i think Pop basically told him he was going to only be a shooter while Kawhi is more polished on that end of the floor overall than Green. out of the two, you need one 3-point specialist imo and not two guys who have to think twice about shooting or driving.

They have been pretty bad sides the ones you said, I agree there. Our team down under a minute too since you mention that can't score worth a crap! They miss one or two shots that could ice the game and keep the other team in it with a shot to win! Missing shots or FT's down the stretch is getting annoying (Like they see a minute coming up and freeze).

Sounds like last year, like I've been saying all year since. Why didn't Tony have the ball for that last possession? Why is your 4th best player (Manu), who really has been prone to turnovers and not shooting well, running that possession?

I understand that basketball is a game of situations, matchups, tendencies, etc but I agree. If you are gonna give the keys to the car to Tony, give it to him all the time. You turned the offense over to him and he has responded every year. This is not a one year thing. This metamorphosis of the Spurs has been taking place over the last 3-4 years.

We've heard the stories of the Summer sitdowns between Pop and Tony and how Pop chides him about how real superstars are consistent. You can't be a one year wonder. Work on your game! You're the "new" face of the franchise! Etc, etc.

Give him the ball and trust that your chiding has paid off Pop. Tony is like a son to you. Trust that you've raised a good young man and let him go. Not just in the first 3 1/2 qtrs but in the last 5 minutes as well.

The times I remember him with the ball in his hand late were the OKC game where he hit the winner and the game against Cleveland where he opened up the side for Kawhis game winner, two times I remember good things happening.

You get a horrible shot drawn up with little time and they have to force up a shot (Tim or Manu) it usually doesn't turn out good. I hate the last possessions at times, they look horrible.
