What I don't understand is.......

and i'm probably wrong, but why in the heck do you bring Joseph from d-league and start him? not that I didn't figure they would recall him. P. Mills and De Colo are your back ups why not give them the minutes? They're the ones backing him up in the playoffs right? Just my thoughts,i definitely will be frustrated if he gets the lions share and they just send him back, I think that would be a waste of a good opportunity to get your back ups some good playing time, just my two cents

I think its so the guys on the bench, mills and nando, can continue to play with the guys off the bench that they would be playing with in an actual game/playoff scenario once parker is back. I doubt joseph is going to still be in the squad once parker is back so that way no one on the bench is all of a sudden playing with someone they havent been in the rotation with for the past 3, 4 or however many weeks. Just my thought.

It seems like for the most part each night its either Mills or Nando who really gets the backup minutes. With tony out you would have thought that they both could have gotten some minutes but with joseph taking up the starting pg minutes and manu essentially running it the whole time, mills was the one who got the time tonite. And plus with the way nando plays as far as passing and stuff like that, we already have manu doing that stuff so it may almost seem redundant to have nando out there with manu.

Free Patty! Seems like he's earned some minutes.

The issue is that while Mills and de colo have more experience and are more backup ready, Joseph has a greater upside and either. He has the physical tools to be a legit NBA starting point guard and he's only 21. Just needs experience. So starting him like was said allows the backups to still remain in their regular rotation while also Getting Joseph minutes he can be comfortable with the starters and focus on his strengths which are solid defense and outside shooting.

When a starter goes down, it's common practice to sub in a replacement (deep bench) as the STARTER. That way, you don't have to screw up your bench rotations, minute allocation, and substitution patterns--especially in March.

I thought Joseph's defense was better than either Nando or Mills has provided. In my opinion, neither Mills or De Colo have shown that they deserve to start with Tony out. Mills has been very inconsistent and doesn't run the team well. De Colo doesn't play very good defense, and doesn't score well.

Of course I like both of those guys, and my comments are relative. I think they are both doing a great job, but I think Joseph is the future for the Spurs. I think that either De Colo or Mills will not be with the team in 2 years, but Joseph will.

CIA Pop

In Pop We Trust

Lol

seriously though, it's protection i would say. Joseph off the bench with Manu would probably have him alone for a few minutes while Manu/TD rest and he'd have to try to create with others off the bench. there's not much chemistry there for that to happen. with the starting unit, Joseph has some protection with 4 guys who've played alongside each other the majority of the year and get to bail him out a bit on both ends of the floor. TD and Splitter setting picks makes it easier for him than an undersized Blair setting one or a Bonner pick and pop.

we also saw the return of Boris Diaw, but no Gary Neal (who was cleared to play). that may speak into that maybe Pop is seeing this team needs an actual point guard than a shooting (can't dribble) point out there. Nando isn't seeing the court either for some reason, only Joseph/Mills.

that could also be that Mills has played his way into the 2nd string point position and Joseph will likely get a lot more time next season. that's the only scenario that would make sense as Nando/Neal not getting minutes now then getting them in the playoffs wouldn't make sense.

Ok, the reason why Pop has Joseph starting and not Mills or DeColo has more to do with not wanting them to get messed up mentally. Even Neal has said that he got comfortable starting at some point and to go back to the bench is something he hasn't gotten used to again. D. Blair also got used to starting and doesn't understand why he wasn't playing during the playoffs or this season. He finally got on the floor only after his agent expressed his discontent with his lack of playing time.

Nando (3) and Patty (2) have both started games this season. Neal's always been a bench player and playing with a calf injury which is why he's played poorly.

let's get realistic about Blair. it's not about "getting used to", it's that the team was the #1 seed with him starting then he got butt hurt that Pop benched him during that span and now he's at the end of the bench. the move with Joseph is more about personnel and protection over getting used to anything. Nando and Mills have barely been getting enough playing time for them to get mentally messed up anyway.

good to see joseph against starters, to evaluate defense...

is needed reliable pg-defense to counter westbrook and paul in PO...
