we went through this a few years back, but i guess it's time to revisit.

there was a situation with other forums where they'd post the whole article on their forums and they got in trouble with those sites.

so for the sake of not getting in trouble, if you're posting an article:

make it a teaser, two paragraphs and a link to the actual article so the article/writer can get a hit on their site and everything is ok

I'm not sure why people are so fickle but could you elaborate on why one gets in trouble even if posted whole article with the link? I can understand not linking source at all but with?

It's the 'Fair Use' principle. You're allowed to use portions of copyrighted material but you're not supposed to just copy an entire article, unless you have the permission of the author.
