A lot of words that say; well, not much of anything. It makes no sense to wait for Oden since he will not be available until next summer at best. Oden is a long term option for the Spurs. They can sign Baynes now and, if they think they have a chance for Oden, they have time between now and summer to rework the roster to make room. Also, I think that the max expectation for Baynes is to be a quality backup not a starter. Even with Oden he will still be on the roster and one or more of the other backups will be cut/traded/waived/let walk to create the space (assuming he lives up to expectations). |

i'm confused. they say the Spurs need to sign a center, so they may sign Oden if Baynes doesn't come fast enough. The Spurs don't own his rights and it'd be beyond stupid if the Spurs buy him out to be a free agent and then have to waive/trade Blair to then make room again for Baynes since the Spurs typically leave one roster spot open in case of emergency. i seriously doubt Oden tries to sign midseason too. it'd be smart for a contender, but Oden can command more money in the offseason if that's his game plan. Spurs didn't announce when Patty Mills was signed, it was reported. the team usually doesn't talk about it until it's official, even if all sides agree.

Makes me think maybe just maybe Spurs are not sure the want to go that route. Maybe just maybe there is another route appeared at the same time and Spurs FO want to use the paper/visa excuse to extend that time until the trade deadline had gone.. If by trade deadline that other option did not pan out, then be all means bring Aron here.

| Currently we do have 1 open roster spot. It is the Spot that was taken up by James Anderson while Kawhi was injured.

thing is, if the team wished him farewell, he's already bought out, and signed. i don't think the Spurs are dumb enough to buy him out for free agency and not sign him. the Spurs have one spot open but we usually leave that for emergency (like if we're tanking a game and need another guard or an injury comes up where Joseph can't fill in). Oden is a possibility, but it's just intrigue by the Spurs for Oden. IF the Spurs can sign Oden for cheap (multiple years likely) this year, it'd be basically the same as if we signed him in the offseason. these are my two cents on it though: big man signing isn't dependant on Oden or Baynes, it's more Splitter. he's a free agent and no one knows how much he'll command over his qualifying offer. the Spurs might want to stock up on bigs in case he plays extremely well and not want to break the bank on a guy who's succeeding on a contract year. It's really all about the playoffs. If Tiago shrinks, he's gone. If he can contribute, it gets tricky. If he extremely overplays his actual worth, then the Spurs are in a lose-lose situation since he might kill any cap hopes for next year with Manu/Jax gone and he might play this well until his next contract is up (lose-lose being an aging team and we're not getting a dominant guy in return for big money).

Visa issues should finish in 10 days but not more than 2 weeks. I guess it could take up to a month maybe. Trade deadline or signing a free agent which is more important now? I guess Spurs FO would be listening to scenarios for Blair, or Bonner, or see what options do they have now......

| Celtics, Cavaliers, Spurs have interest in Oden (and he could sign soon) Kurt Helin / Jan 17, 2013, 2:00 PM EST You can throw a couple more teams into the “we’re interested” file for Greg Oden. As we told you recently, Oden is taking classes at Ohio State and working out and rehabbing to attempt one more NBA comeback. This is a long shot — he has already had three microfracture surgeries on his knees. And seven total surgeries. At age 24. But if he does teams like the Heat and Mavericks are reportedly interested (although who has spoken to his agent and how serious they are remains up for debate). You can also add the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers to the mix, reports Ken Berger at CBSSports.com. Part of Oden’s plan is to sign with a team in the next month and get into a training and conditioning program with an eye toward returning to the floor next season. The Celtics are among the teams monitoring Oden’s progress, and sources tell CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman that the Spurs and Cavaliers have expressed interest, too. If you are saying “why would you sign this guy?” you need to look around the league at the dearth of quality big men. Oden is never going to live up to the No. 1 pick potential, but if you could get him at a good price to give you 15 minutes a night off the bench, a whole lot of teams could use that. Look at the teams going after him — Spurs, Celtics, Heat. These are some of he NBA’s smart, well run teams. Teams want to sign Oden and get him before another team grabs him. He can work out with them all summer and then they can make a run at it next season. Hence the desire on both sides to get it done now.
