Many of the NBA Finals they were in were some of the lowest, so you could see why Stern stated (take it jokingly) that his preferred Finals match up would be
"Lakers vs Lakers". His gripe with a humble San Antonio Spurs team who didn't flaunt around egos or seek to be "exciting" over their true mission of winning a championship was that they "weren't marketable". No one talked about the Spurs, even when they were winning championships (four to be exact). Mainstream media outlets would choose to talk about free agent signings or trades going on instead of giving the "boring" champions some well deserved recognition.
