http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/87...cording-report The New Orleans Hornets are expected to become the New Orleans Pelicans, perhaps as early as the 2013-14 season, according to a Yahoo! Sports report. Yahoo! Sports, citing numerous sources, reports the team also considered Krewe and Brass as potential nicknames. The Hornets have planned to change their name since New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, who also owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname, bought the team in April. Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said in November he'd be interested in bringing the Hornets' name back to Charlotte. "It's definitely an interest down the road, but right now it's the New Orleans Hornets," Jordan told the Charlotte Observer. "We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That's as much as we can say right now. We've heard the community ask the question, and we would listen." The pelican is Louisiana's state bird and appears on both the state seal and flag. A New Orleans minor league baseball team held the Pelicans nickname in all but nine seasons from 1887-1959, and again in 1977. The Hornets moved to New Orleans from Charlotte in 2002, and when Benson bought the team earlier this year, he said he would like to change the name to something more fitting of Louisiana. His wife, Gayle, reiterated that idea and added that the franchise also would like to change the team colors from teal and purple to red, gold and navy blue.

It just doesn't sound right. Doesn't sound like a legitimate professional sports team name. Benson's out of his mind. I liked calling them the Whorenets. I guess I can call them the Peelickcans, but it's not as funny.

Benson knows the NO market far better than anyone here, and probably has more money than the combined SR posters. If he believes the name Pelicans will work in NO, provide some local pride or interest, more power to him. Team naming is a perq of owning a team. Not many get to do this. |

A good artist (and I bet he has access to several really, really good artists) could turn out a pelican logo that worked. And as far as how tough the name sounds...let us not forget he has a football team called the 'SAINTS' how tough does that sound?

Some originals: Philadelphia Warriors New Orleans Jazz Vancouver Grizzlies Indianapolis Pistons Minnesota Lakers Baltimore Bullets Some NBA names are lame: Knickerbocker? 76er? Laker in Los Angeles? or a Laker anywhere else for that matter? Jazz in Salt Lake City? Grizzly in Memphis? Cavalier in Cleveland? So wanting to be a Pelican in New Orleans doesn't surprise me all that much even though I don't care for it. The name of their minor league baseball team was the Pelicans which was near and dear to the oldtimers. |

we'll see how it plays out. no idea how many free agents will be thrilled to be a part of the Pelicans squad now more than they did before the news came out. won't matter for the base if no one wants to come play there.

| Ooops, forgot to mention this. The money that Benson has in the bank means that he has made more good business decisions than bad ones. Of course, this always depends on what you've seen after watching him do business. Naming the team is quite possibly just another business decision. Maybe there is emotion built in, but not likely. He's trying to cut the last ties to the last owners (George Shinn and the NBA). New owner, new name, new direction! |

| That's good the only problem is in our politically correct world someone, somewhere would take offense and say the name could cause some poor victim of katrina to suffer post traumatic stress, every time they heard it.

The Brown Pelican is the state bird and apparently means a lot to anyone from there, and as far as birds go you have to have been close up to one to realise it is one big scary feathery mo fo. I think it is a smart play to connect the team to the local area and yes already owning a franchise that has won it all either he himself or those running both teams will know their area and how to brand themselves in a marketplace.

The name was picked because it best represented the spirit of the west, which actually used to be a big part of what San Antonio was known for. Before bio-med took over the area, SA was known for two things military and ranching. That's why to this day the San Antonio Livestock show draws 2 million folks to the grounds during its run in February

I'm not concerned about state birds or capturing spirit, or whatever. In my opinion, it's just not a good name for a pro team. It sounds too college-ish. Like the blue hens, or jack rabbits, or roadrunners, etc. But yeah, it's not my team or my money. Everyone will get used to it. Go Peelickhands!

Pelicans a good choice for New Orleans! LINK The New Orleans Hornets are reportedly set to become the New Orleans Pelicans. Everyone is laughing at the new name. Although the team may appreciate the respite from being laughed at because of its play, going unmocked is probably what it would prefer the most. What the currently egged birds need is a Page Ranking campaign to let the public know why Pelicans is a great team name. Here are pro-Pelican talking points they can use. Pelicans are more virile than you think Picking a bird that is easy to kill might sound like a poor choice, but pelicans are actually no longer endangered in the United States thanks to bans on pesticides that were fatal to them. However, pelicans do still get stuck in fishing lines and injure themselves by flying into wires. Fortunately, the use of fishing lines and wires would be considered illegal defense in the NBA and no doubt whistled by several of the league’s more competent officials. Louisiana is the Pelican State In case you were confused as to why they adopted the Pelicans name, there you go. Granted, state nicknames might not seem like a great way to name a sports team. No one thinks the Atlanta Hawks should become the Atlanta Peaches or that the Utah Jazz should become the Utah Beehives or that the Chicago Bulls should become the Chicago Prairies. However, it is educational about the state of Louisiana. We now know that Louisiana is the Pelican State and not the Football State, the Mad Hatter State or the S-E-C! S-E-C! S-E-C! State. And it will stay that way as long as the state nickname doesn’t go up for a vote. Pelicans have distinctive plumage Young pelicans, or pelican chicks, retain a distinctive plumage for three to four years until developing their adult feathers. This is where you can feel free to make your own joke about Anthony Davis deciding to shave off his unibrow in three or four years. No TMZ scandals Pelicans breed on high, rocky cliffs and remote islands -- away from predators and, more importantly, away from paparazzi. That lessens the chances we’ll ever see compromising photos of Al-Farouq Aminu or Ryan Anderson. Pelicans are heroic ![]() Think of all the many hero pelicans in pop culture. There’s that one from “Finding Nemo” that helped save those aquarium fish, right? And then there’s ... huh. Well, “Finding Nemo 2” is coming out in 2016. Maybe the pelican has an even bigger role in the sequel. Plus, don’t forget that Nemo pelican was voiced by Geoffrey Rush. Imagine the nuance and depth an Oscar winner would bring to the role of NBA team mascot. Sure, the Suns’ Gorilla will jump through a ring of fire, but what is his motivation? And what does it say about gorilladom in modern society? Pelicans will bite an old man in the crotch ![]() Twice, in fact. Too bad Chris Paul doesn’t still play for New Orleans. That’s a man who can respect a good crotch attack. It could have been worse Pelicans are members of the order Pelecaniformes, which also includes cormorants, frigatebirds and boobies. All of those would be a far worse team name that Pelicans. Well, except maybe for the New Orleans Boobies. That would keep the bird thing going and also allow the team to make a fortune in Mardi Gras-related T-shirt sales. Hmm. Is it too late to change the team name to the New Orleans Boobies? ![]() _________________________ AAAAAHHHH Whatever!

| New Orleans Hornets changing name to Pelicans? NBA team denies report of new name for club Yahoo! Sports reported Tuesday that Tom Benson was changing the name, but a team spokesman says team hasn't settled on a new nickname. The Pelicans have not been cleared for takeoff. The New Orleans Hornets have denied a report that the team will change its name - perhaps by the start of next season - from Hornets to Pelicans. “We’re not confirming that is the name,” Hornets spokesman Greg Bensel told the New Orleans Times Picayune when asked about a Yahoo! Sports story reporting that a name change was imminent. “This is a process that’s ongoing and still in discussions. And it will be eventually decided by the NBA,” Bensel said. The Hornets were purchased by New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson in April for $338 million and Benson has said that he would entertain the idea of changing the team’s name - a subject he says fans have brought up with him since he bought the club. The Times Picayune reports that Benson has been pushing for a name change - he’s reportedly owned the rights to the Pelican nickname for quite a while - and his wife, Gayle, has said that she wants to see the team’s colors changed to navy blue, red and gold. Times Picayune columnist Jeff Duncan polled his Twitter followers about the proposed name change and wrote that the Pelicans nickname was viewed as a dud. Duncan proposed the name Dukes and according to the Yahoo! report, Brass and Krewe were also considered. “I won’t say when it will happen, but of course I would support a (name) change,” NBA commissioner David Stern told the Times Picayune before the Yahoo! story was published. New Orleans was home to the Jazz - a perfect name for the team - for five seasons from 1974 to 1979 before founder Sam Battisone moved the team to Utah. The NBA returned to the Big Easy in 2002 when the Charlotte Hornets relocated to New Orleans and kept the nickname along with its teal color scheme. If New Orleans ditches the Hornets nickname, Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan has said that he might drop the Bobcats nickname and bring the Hornets name back to Charlotte. The Brown Pelican is the state bird of Louisiana - it was also the nickname for a minor league baseball team in New Orleans - and would fit right in to the NBA’s animal-friendly landscape of Bulls, Bucks, Grizzlies and Hawks, among others.
