Tiago Splitter, whose first two NBA seasons were pockmarked by nagging injury after nagging injury, suited up but did not participate in the Spurs’ open scrimmage Wednesday night at the AT&T Center. The big Brazilian center is dealing with back spasms, which are not considered serious but prevented the team’s medical staff from clearing him to play. He is day-to-day. Splitter averaged 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds last season, and could be in line for an expanded role on the Spurs’ second unit this season if he can remain healthy. His unavailability Wednesday gave Spurs coaches a chance to look at camp big men Eddy Curry and Josh Powell in a competitive situation. Spurs Nation

Well he didn't play last year but in 10/11 he got more blocks and boards than Splitter, the closest comparison, got in 11/12. So potentially not a down grade at least if he was gotten for cheap.

Powell looked pretty solid, but he has some decent NBA experience so no surprise. Curry looked mostly bad but had a few good stops on Duncan. He missed that wide open dunk and chuckled as he failed to get back and Duncan got an easy 2 on the other end from Manu. He was subbed out shortly after.
