Spurs sign Brown to non-guaranteed deal

The Spurs have signed journeyman forward Derrick Brown to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract, according to Yahoo’s Marc J. Spears.

Brown (6-foot-8, 235 pounds) was originally drafted in the second round by Charlotte in 2009.

He was picked up by the Knicks after the Bobcats waived him midway through his second season. Brown, 25, returned to Charlotte last season, averaging 8.1 points (51.8 percent shooting) and 3.6 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game. His 14.7 PER was just a hair under the weighted league average. The bad news — it came while playing for one of the worst teams in history.

Writer’s note: I consider myself a pretty educated NBA fan, but I literally cannot tell you a single thing about Brown other than his stats look fairly decent for a castoff type. His (admittedly dated) scouting report at Draft Express describes an athletic, undersized tweener who lacks polish. Here’s a more recent assessment from something called NBApostup.com.

At any rate, I certainly like this pickup better than the corpse of Tracy McGrady, who reportedly worked out with the Spurs earlier this week. Maybe he’ll thrive in a winning atmosphere — provided he makes it through training camp, of course.

Nice find, just has to work on his shooting.

Those of you who might have buzzed by Eddy's link above and are still curious about Derrick Brown, after you finish the link above, there are about 5 additional clip choices at the end of Eddy's link. They might give you an insight to the newest Spur and how he moves on the floor. Thanks Eddy for the link. Interesting player.

In the clip it shows him dunking on our defensive specialist Matt Bonner, and our team X-factor Dejuan Blair, great! Already 2 team members hate the guy and he hasn't even played a game in SA...

On a serious note, I doubt he makes any serious impact but I do like the fact that he's athletic enough to slam it in defenders faces, I would have liked to see Milicic more but that ship has sailed.

Obviously, someone who can attack the basket, create his own shot and finish at the hole. Really like this pickup because it will keep guys like OKC's Sephalosha (Sp?) On their heels defensively.

P.S. Stephen Jackson plays very well with this guy!!!

Maybe Captain Jack gave the Spurs FO the heads up on Brown to get them looking. Here's his bio link on NBA.com.

I can think of a few pluses if no one else is going to mention them:

He has a 7'-2" wingspan and a 36" verticle leap which essentially makes him more effective than Bonner or Blair up high.

He fluctuates between 225 and 236 lbs which means he won't likely get pushed around as bad as a Malcom Thomas. Rather he'd get pushed around more like a SJax or Sean Elliot.

Maybe more important than any of that, by watching the video, he seems to have a natural sense of timing and placement on the offensive boards much like Kawhi Leonard. Something Bonner and Splitter do not seem to have. Blair has it but doesn't have the verticle leap. This could be a plus in regards to offensive rebounds.

Anyone still smelling a trade? I am!

choppsboy 09-21-12 11:45 AM

I don't smell a trade. . . . I smell training camp fodder.

Jose_TheGenius 09-21-12 01:48 PM

i would think trade if it was a guaranteed deal, they just need another body for training camp.

Right now teams are shoring up their training camp rosters. It's normal for this time of the year. I will say about the smelling trade part..........I can see your point but not because of this signing or if they even signed T-MAC. Now if they signed Josh Howard.......that could be a sign there of something brewing. Non guaranteed deals don't hold a lot of weight with me. Just saying. Not in todays NBA.

You guys are absolutely right. This is a non-guaranteed deal! Missed that.

I guess we can see if he survives camp, and modestly project him taking James Anderson's spot on the bench. I do like the fact that he attacks the rim and gets in transition. We have a glut of 3 pt shooters, who go ice cold. Maybe someone attacking the rim and making something happen (drawing a foul or sucking in the defense) will open things up for the 2nd unit

De Colo took Anderson's spot. unless he plays well enough to cut anyone, he won't stay

You're right , I spaced on Nando.

Then he takes the place of Butler? the WVU 6-7 swingman who was trying to rehab his ACL. I guess we can keep in the D League and bring him up when people get hurt. Or he gets cut. I personally would like to cut a 3 pt shooter and add a 6-7 Swing man. On top of a Big man. haha

I'm confused. Is Marcus Denmon still counted into the roster? Otherwise they only have 14 before adding Brown.

Denmon is listed on the Spurs roster page right now

Good luck to him.

How can he still be on the Spurs roster and be signed with Elan Shalon in the Euroleague?

Exactly. I'm not saying brown won't be cut after training camp but if teams can or must have a 15-man roster, he does not have to be cut.
