Patty Mills in the news

Australian basketball star Patty Mills has backed Boomers teammate Joe Ingles to join him in the NBA after both had an impressive Olympic campaign.

San Antonio point guard Mills scored 21.2 points per game, the highest average of any player in the tournament.

"I had no idea until I was told about it, it wasn't really a goal, but it's exciting," Mills told AAP when the team arrived back in Australia on Wednesday.

Ingles, 24, who like Mills was appearing at his second Olympics, averaged 15 points, five rebounds and four assists a game and made a double digit scoring contribution in each of Australia's six matches.

The FC Barcelona Regal swingman underlined his class with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the quarter-final loss to the United States, the eventual gold medalist.

Asked if he thought Ingles could break into the NBA Mills said, "No question, he's definitely an NBA Player.

"For us to do well, he was going to need to have a good tournament and that's what he did, so very proud to play with him and all the boys are very happy with him."

Ingles revealed his agent had already fielded calls from NBA parties.

"He didn't tell me the specifics, he just said there was some interest there," Ingles told AAP.

"I kind of told him to be quiet and I'm going to focus on Barcelona for one more year and see what happens after that.

"I've got one more year with Barcelona and I want to stay there and finish out my contract."

Patience is also an attribute possessed by Mills, who is content to continue backing up French superstar Tony Parker at the Spurs.

"I see myself getting a lot better just from learning from him, so that in itself gets me excited," Mills said.

"I'm not getting to greedy about minutes just yet, just go with the flow pick up things as you go and I think everything else will fall into place."

Mills said he was proud of Australia's achievement of making the quarter-finals and felt they got better as the tournament progressed.

"There's that feeling of not achieving our goal, we did want to win a medal, that was our mindset and we didn't," Mills said.

"The exciting thing to know is that most of these guys will be back again in four years time, so the team won't change that much.

"The hungry feeling is definitely still there."

He has some limits with his size and probably needs some work on passing but at the same time, I'm glad that he is not on someone else's team that the Spurs have to play against.

So long as Pop gives him a chance to actually play.
