During the summer league game vs. the Hawks, they interviewed Pop for a while. Great interview, but in it, he was asked: "What type of player are you hoping to sign?" His answer (I'm paraphrasing) "No one, our roster is full" He also said he wasn't over the Thunder lost and as a parting shot when they were saying "thanks for coming, Coach of the Year, Gregg Popovich" he answered "The Coach of the Year doesn't lose 4 in a row....think about that for a minute." | It's kind of true. Unless there are better options that Spurs can actually sign/trade that's probably it. |

Seems like a straight answer to me. Its not like every front office in the League doesn't know that the Spurs would move Bonner or Blair to get an interior defender and its not like every front office in the League doesn't know that the Spurs would move Blair for a draft pick. There simply are no takers. The Spurs can't afford an amnestied player. An extreme longshot is that someone comes out of summer league somewhere but it certainly won't be Ryan Richards this year. More likely is that the Spurs lose a big in Blair if he ends up disgruntled and then the Spurs would be willing to accomodate him in exchange for a draft pick or such. The Spurs still have 2 shots at getting an interior defender before the playoffs but not likely until well into the season. That opportunity would come if a disgruntled player from another team asks to be traded or a player with an expiring contract is waived at the trade deadline to save the team money. Pop has likely moved past any thoughts of acquiring such a player and is focused on basketball and a championship.

Yeah, I think he's given up on making any big move this offseason. If anything happens it'll be with expiring contracts like Sjax/Blair/Bonner this trade deadline IMO. But they like the guys they have. When you're a coach/GM, the hardest thing to do is avoid shuffling players with other teams just to do something to try to improve. Spurs are good at avoiding that. We as fans not so much. |
