New Low for NBA Refs: Tech for High-Fiving Teammate

You can expect a sympathetic text message from Rajon Rondo any minute now.

Los Angeles Clippers forward Reggie Evans was issued a technical foul by NBA referee Marc Davis for high-fiving teammate Blake Griffin during the second quarter of Game 6 of a Wesern Conference first round playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The play unfolded in transition, as Evans received a pass from Griffin and attempted to go up over Grizzlies center Marc Gasol with the Grizzlies leading 38-36 with 1:25 remaining. Evans was fouled on his way up by Grizzlies forward Quincy Pondexter and opted to celebrate his pending free throws by high-fiving Griffin. Grizzlies forward Dante Cunningham was standing between the two Clippers, bending down to pick up the loose ball. That's when Davis, who was trailing the play, charged in from halfcourt, signalling for a technical foul and then pointing at Evans.

"What did he do?" Griffin appeared to ask Davis' crew members as both he and Evans reacted in total disbelief. "We high-fived."

Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay made the free throw awarded for the technical foul and play continued.

Davis was the same referee who was bumped by Rondo during Game 1 of an Eastern Conference first round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks after he issued a technical foul to Rondo for arguing a no-call. Rondo was later suspended for Game 2 for bumping Davis.

this sucks! The league should pull Davis immediately if they want to sustain their credibility

It's time to start suspending referees without pay! So sick of some of those punks! It's a new season and games are much more meaningful, so the refs need to adjust, and quick.

did Evans say something to taunt the guy since we didn't see his face during the High 5?

this ref should be on a short leash though, no way can he be the "center of the show" and i'm sure Stern will do something about it.

the Clippers/Grizzlies series has been painful to watch though. the Clippers flopping every other time on every type of play is embarrassing. they try to act like tough guys out there but complain about every little thing (which can irritate the refs). not condoning it though

My only guess is that he said something to a player or something about a ref or something to that. Remember Reggie Evans is no saint.........lol

Didn't I read or hear somewhere that the league wants to let the players determine the outcome of the game and not the officials? I was watching this game and I want to know why they were T-ed up? The officials basically gave the Grizzlies a point that they did not earn. I agree that the officials who make calls like that one, are hurting the credibility of the game. Their credibility was already suspect to begin with.

agreed. we'd have to around 5 sec before this clip to see if there's any reason for him to call a tech (legit reason anyway)

I gotta say that the officiating has been inconsistent or consistently bad depending on your perspective. I watched the Clippers/Grizz game and the referees were letting everything go except for clubs and brass knuckles. A stark contrast from the Heat/Pacers game where the officials were calling touch fouls on the Pacers. This is ridiculous!

I wonder how they are going to call it for Spurs/Clippers?

Reggie Evans deserves absolutely no sympathy. Let's just call it delayed payback for this:

...and this:

...and this:

Couldn't have happened to a better guy!!
