Former Spur Dwayne Schintzius passes away at 43 Written by Jeff Garcia | 15 April 2012 Former San Antonio Spurs center Dwayne Schintzius has passed away at 43 after a long battle with Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML), an uncommon blood cancer. He passed away Sunday afternoon from respiratory failure. Schintzius had endured months of complications after receiving a second bone-marrow transplant, his younger brother Travis said. “He’s at peace now,’’ Schintzius’ brother said. “He’s not suffering any more. Now he’s probably cracking jokes and making people laugh in heaven.’’ Dwayne was drafted by the Spurs in the first round of the 1990 NBA Draft. He played one season with San Antonio before being traded to the Kings. READ MORE AT PROJECTSPURS.COM |

I remember when Bass and Larry Brown drafted Dwayne they had hopes of creating "twin towers". The Plan was to have David play power forward because he was athletic, could put the ball on the floor, and had a great(still the most underrated part of his game)jump shot that was like a guided missile from as far as 18 feet. I thought it was a great plan. Dwayne certainly was a beast in College and had all the tools to become an effective NBA center, he single handed took a "poe dunk" Florida college to the NCAA 3 connective years. However he was a guy who danced to the beat of is own drummer. Like the article said, he cut off his mullet and sent the hair to Bass in an envelope. I can imagine the frustration he must have put Larry Brown through.(maybe that was one of the factors in Larry leaving the team-were a lot of 'free thinkers' on that roster) Ah what could have been. Could have been what we experienced with Tim and David but 20 years ago. Dwayne was a unique guy. The world is a less interesting place for not having characters like him in it. Saw him twice in public in his playing days here. Big Dude! A 7-2 monster that never panned out. They got the Big Dawg Antoine Carr for him in a trade. Great trade for the Spurs. Anyways........... RIP Dwayne

Folks were really excited when he was drafted, so sad his career was never what it could have been and now to pass at so young an age. Deepest sympathies to his family
