Report -- New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson lines up to buy New Orleans Hornets - ESPN NEW YORK -- The Saints say the NFL team's owner Tom Benson has bought the New Orleans Hornets from the NBA. The team said on Twitter Friday they are "thrilled" to confirm "Tom Benson as the new owner of the New Orleans (at)Hornets!" A person familiar with the deal says the purchase price is $338 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the financial terms have not been announced. The NBA has been trying to sell the Hornets since buying the club from founder George Shinn in December 2010. While preparing the team for sale the league negotiated a new lease for the Hornets to remain in the state-owned New Orleans Arena through 2024. Glad they have a new owner, but he's 84 years old, not sure exactly why they choose him over the other group (of which his brother was a member...) should be interesting at Thanksgiving around the dinner table.

New York, NY – Saints owner Tom Benson has bought the New Orleans Hornets from the NBA. The NFL club's Twitter feed confirmed the purchase, which still must be approved by the NBA's Board of Governors. The league bought the Hornets for a reported $318 million from George Shinn in December 2010. It is being reported by NBA.com that Benson has bought the NBA team for $338 million. Benson, under NFL rules, is allowed to own both clubs because they are in the same market. The 84-year-old Benson purchased the Saints from John Mecom in 1985. He helped guide the franchise its first Super Bowl title after the 2009 season. But the Saints have come under scrutiny recently, dealing with multiple NFL penalties due a bounty program. The Hornets moved to New Orleans from Charlotte in 2002, but the club spent two full seasons in Oklahoma City after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

They are also going to change the name. Wonder what it will be? New Orleans Hornets to get new nickname? Story indicates it might happen | NOLA.com  If you check the comments the people of NOLA wants the team colors and Brand to reflect the Saints... They were worried about having problems with the NFL... now that Benson is the Owner... We'll probably see a Black and Gold Color Scheme... and some kind of name that works with New Orleans Saints? |

I think is great for them to have a singular owner where the buck will stop with him. I also read somewhere that benson wants to change the team name to actively reflect the city of new Orleans, which I think is a good thing. They definitely need him to take over. |
