Paul Millsap Thought Gregg Popovich Resting Stars Was ‘a Slap in the Face’

Paul Millsap Thought Gregg Popovich Resting Stars Was ‘a Slap in the Face’
by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The issue of resting healthy players during a game came to the fore once again last night, as Gregg Popovich had the San Antonio Spurs’ three stars – Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili – watch the festivities from the comfort of their own homes.

This act, apparently, provided the Utah Jazz with plenty of motivation, as they defeated the visiting and short-handed Spurs.

Paul Millsap called it a “slap in the face”, but Pop openly admits that resting his aging veterans is far more important than securing the top Playoff seed in the Western Conference.

From the Salt Lake Tribune and NBA.com:

Jazz forward Paul Millsap said it was a “slap in the face.” Respected San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich continued to try and outsmart the 2011-12 lockout-compressed season, refusing to bring Spurs stars Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to Salt Lake City on Monday for Utah’s 91-84 win. Millsap acknowledged his team was insulted by Popovich’s gamble, saying the Jazz took extra inspiration from the no-show. “I think that was a little motivation that … got us through, just thinking about that,” Millsap said.

“Well, we’re trying to survive,” Popovich said. “Our schedule speaks for itself. If you look at the schedule, you figure out real quickly. No matter how look at it (five games in seven nights this week), eight games in 13 nights, 16 games in 23 days, it’s just crazy, so I got to do something about it. It just doesn’t make sense to have those guys playing four times in five nights, or three in a row.”

Opposing coaches and players may characterize this as “cheating the game”, or use it as motivation to beat the Spurs in games they already conceded ahead of time. But Gregg Popovich knows what he’s doing, and he told anyone who’d listen at the start of the season that he would strategically rest his star players.

Pop and the Spurs are smartly taking the long view here, and betting that health and fresh legs (rather than Playoff seeding) will play a larger role in their success once the postseason rolls around.

If anyone fighting for a playoff spot needs "extra inspiration" to try harder, then it really just shows how much of a loser they are.

Wow.....it takes alot of motivation to win by what....7 points? Against the Spurs reserves who were beating them with 3 or 4 minutes to go in the game. If anything, that should be a slap in the Jazz's collective faces.

I don't take any offense to this. Players always will try to use anything to get up for a game. I respect players that are competitive and are self motivated. Look at the other end of the spectrum at a team like the Wizards. They could care less.

Jazz were looking down at the Spurs reserves and were thinking they would dominate them....

What really happened was Spurs reserves surprised them and fought as hard as they could and they almost made it through up until the fourth Q of the game where the reserves gassed out....

Result...Jazz BARELY won...

LMAO @ Millsap's little motivation...

Paul Milsap was getting defended well by Stephen Jackson, someone skinnier than him when he professes to be a strong PF.

they felt more embarrassed they didn't lose to a complete Spurs team than almost losing to the Spurs bench.

Meh. Whatever works for him. The big 3 should've played maybe 10 mins. That would have been enough for the win. As I watch these role players, I'm more and more thinking that HCA is very important.

He's really going to get a kick out of it when they do get the 8th seed and we have the first! But then they'll need a little more than motivation when that time comes. Hell, we didn't even play everyone the night before. Just shut the hell up, fight your butts off to get a playoff spot, and get swept in the first round! It'll be like not even making the playoffs.... Milsap.

It is insulting, but I'm sure Pop doesn't care about that at all. Good for Millsap that he found a way to get motivated, I guess.

Yup, exactly what I was thinking... 7 points! If you want respect from your opponents, earn it.

Millsap would not had said that if they had lost. Funny it's always after the game and not before. Nice try Paul......lol. Paul Millsap will be in the playoffs......but as a good luck charm on TV for the lottery selection process.

Millsap is one of their featured players? LoL Utah can look forward to a long period of sucking with guys like that...

He should have said "than you pop for the needed win" and moved on his way...
