SAN ANTONIO -- Toyota plans to transfer production of the Tacoma pickup truck to its factory in San Antonio, according to a report in Reuters.
The transfer would happen in June 2010 after the California plant that currently manufacturers the Tacoma closes, the news agency said.
According to Reuters, Toyota officials will notify the Fremont, Calif., plant by the end of this month whether they will continue to build Tacomas at the plant or pull out of the 25-year old plant, which it jointly operated with General Motors before GM declared bankruptcy.
"We think it makes a lot of business sense to come to San Antonio, but we also know there's a lot of political pressure in California," said Wolff.
City and state leaders have remained proactive in their pursuit to expand Toyota's presence in San Antonio, already sending an incentives package to Toyota.
"This is my second go around with this so I have a pretty good sense of what we need to do to be reasonable to attract it," added Wolff.
Options for Tacoma production in North America include the current plant, a smaller plant in Baja California, one in Indiana and San Antonio. California went public with its incentives package to hold onto it's lone production plant, but Wolff said Texas isn't willing to divulge details until Toyota makes a decision.
"It'd be a significant step up," said Wolff. "We have 2,000 working at the plant now, this would increase it like about another thousand and we'd have the opportunity to bring other suppliers here of Tacoma products."
The newspaper said San Antonio would begin building Tacomas as soon as June 2010.
Reuters based its report on a story that appeared in the Japan newspaper Asahi Shimbun.
Toyota has started to inform its main suppliers about the plans, the Ashai said.
While the newspaper said that Toyota would make a decision by the end of the month, a spokesman for the automaker said the company has not made an official decision.
